    Hi All,
    I give UP !!

Could some please tell me how to allow and block users from seeing the contents folders on our server.

We have 5 PC's. One of which is a Server. All PC's and the Server are running winXP Pro SP2.
What we want to do is have a folder on the server which only certain people can access the contents of and block others.
Please could someone give me a step by step please ?

    Regards
    Kevin

First thing to get your head around is that there are two levels of permissions:

    Share permissions
These control who (or what) is allowed to access a resource over the network. The share permission only controls the access point. So if you think of your file system as a storeroom, share permissions control access through the door, but do not restrict access once the user is in the storeroom. Therefore, you can allow or block access to the share point, and you can restrict the type of access (for example, to read-only), but you can't be more specific.

    File permissions
These control access to particular files and/or folders. They restrict the access for a user whether they are logged onto the PC or connecting in over the network. You can set file access permissions by right clicking on the file itself, selecting Properties and going to the Security tab (if the files are on an NTFS partition). For folders file permission cascade downward if everything else is left as default. Therefore, if you restrict access to a folder, the files in that folder will inherit the same restriction.

So a possible way to control access is to
    1. right click on the folder you want to share and select "Sharing and Security ".
    2. Select "Share this folder" and either accept the default name or change it.
    3. Click on the permissions button and either select Everyone, and check the change tab, or delete Everyone, and add only those people you want to allow access.
    4. Click on the Security tab and use the options there to control access to the shared folder. You should get a little more control of permissions here compared with the share permission options.
    5. OK the changes.
    6. Then use file permissions on sub-folders to control access to subfolders.

If that doesn't get you where you want to be, have a look at this recent article on the O'Reilly site.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Simple File Sharing should not be used in this type of setup. In which case, after disabling SFS, the server box should add the desired usernames of who may access shares over the network, and then setup the shares for those users. I believe if use SFS then certain security features may not be available.

    Hi,
    Simple File Sharing is disabled..

What I would like is a simple step by step guide on setting permissions on a small network.
