    When you say
do you mean it shows your PCs ip address and mask?
It should also show your gateway (the IP address of your router).

    So you see something like
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

    Are you using DHCP?

sorry for the vague description dhcp is enabled, it was set to disabled when I got it and enabled it in services.msc. the ip address that shows is 169.254.52.255 subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 and default gateway is empty. under ip settings dhcp is enabled.

I think it should be showing a gateway rather than being blank.

Do you know what the gateway is or do you have any other PCs connected and can look to see what they show for a gateway?

I talked to my friend who has high speed internet at home (I don't) and he mentioned that in his IP settings, he also selcts the option to obtain the DNS automatically too.

I am sorry, I can't post any more after this as I am leaving for the weekend.

I would try making the IP address static. Give the new PC the same settings as your other but just increment the IP address by one. The mask and gateway should match. Do that and restart to make sure it takes.

If it works correctly, you should be able to ping the gateway address, and the other PC address...assuming there are no firewalls turned on.

    Have a good one.

"dhcp is enabled, it was set to disabled when I got it and enabled it in services.msc "

There is no service role for using DHCP addressing. Obviously DHCP is enabled on your client, as otherwise it would not return the failure results you are obtaining with an APIA Address of 169.254.52.255.

My guess is your Winsock service stack is corrupt.

If your PC is XP, running Service Pack 2:

    Start, Run, CMD
    netsh winsock reset

Wait for the message to reboot your computer. Reboot your computer.

For any other case, download and run WinsockFix:

Now the serious issue: you really need an antivirus program, a firewall, and I would add an anti-spyware program. It is very dangerous to connect to the Internet without the first two, and I would not even try.
