    Hi,

my pc would not start and after an hour or so fooling with it I finally managed to get it up and running, but I noticed that my display setting have changed. I used system restore to restore a week earlier and everything seems fine. The only problem I am having now is that when I right click on the desktop and go to properties, the only thing available is the display tab, the screensaver and other setting tabs are gone. I tried running sfc /scannow , even though I built this computer and legally purchased win xp home, it keeps telling me i have the wrong cd. Any ideas?

    Ken

    Good Morning Pete

Thanks for the reply. Just so you know , I am a mod on Tom Coyote for removing Viruses and Malware along with doing some work on Bleeping Computer and Castlecops. Anytime I have a user that posts a Hijackthis log that is clean, after running some clean up programs and its determined that its a windows issue, I always refer them here.:)

I am still having problems running system file checker. I went and copied the I386 folder of my original Windows Home CD ( built this computer myself about 2 and a half years ago and it had no service packs..I installed SP1 and then SP2 ) Doing what I do at Tom Coyote I know my system is free of any viruses or malware. I then went and changed the SourcePath in regedit in both the windows folder and the windowsNT folder to C:\ , rebooted and its still asking me for the disk.

What basically happened I don't know, the other night my computer just would not start, so I finally booted from the CD, bypassed the recovery console and did the repair feature, it started removing files and then prompted me for the CD, wouldnt take it. I rebooted and windows started up, but was not the same so I did a system restore for a week earlier and all seemed fine except now I have no display tab to change screensavers and such.

    Thanks,
    Ken

    Morning to you Ken

Good to meet a fellow mod and thanks for the 'business' :)

With the i386 folder copied to the root of C:\ - i.e. C:\i386 the registry entries should be as shown in the screenshot below - ignore the upper red line, that was there for another purpose unrelated to your problem.

If you do not have all the entries put them in.

I'm not sure that graphic has all the right settings or which ones are pertinent. It doesn't show any reference to c:\i386.

Check in this key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Its my understanding that with XP, you just point to the drive and make sure that I386 is at the top. I remember doing this with win98 and we pointed to the exact folder.

Those reg settings are correct - and work :)

The reference to the i386 folder is ServicePackSourcePath.

As a follow up read this article, scroll to the end for the important bit .....

Dont know if I got it right

    Pete,

It ran but I had to baby it along, it stopped about 30 or more times asking for the windows home service pack 2 CD. I am a little confused as to the registry setting, did you want me to change just the bottom two you have outlined in red or the whole thing. In your screenshot, it shows ServicePackSourcePath as C:\ yet in the article you pointed me to its says it should be C:\windows\Service PackFiles which is was but I changed it to C:\

Another thing in the article, with windows enabled to show all files and folders and the checkmark out of hide extensions for known file types, I have no C:\windows\system32\DLLcache. I did a windows search and what I have is C:\windows\LastGood\system32\DLLcache.

    I'm lost on this one:confused:

Somewhere on the Board is a very long thread on this subject which was finally resolved using the settings specified in my screenshot adjacent to the lower two red lines. The line above is unchanged from standard.

I suspect your problem is that, as you posted, your XP CD is vanilla and does not include any service packs. The settings I posted work for an XP SP2 CD or an XP SP1 CD slipstreamed with SP2.

I suggest you slipstream SP2 into your XP CD using the method outlined in this HelpWithWindows article .....

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD
You have - did you uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files' under Folder Options > View?

What is the score on the display properties tab?

    Hi, Ken. :)

Here is a link to an alternative method of creating a slipstreamed bootable Windows XP SP2 CD in case you want to give that method a shot. :)

    Thanks Pete

I will work on this tomorrow.

    Yes I did
You have - did you uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files' under Folder Options > View?

    Still not there.
What is the score on the display properties tab?

I was hoping system file checker would restore the files that I may be missing.

The windows CD I have is over 2 years old and has no service packs, will this work with this or do I need it to have SP1. I also have the SP2 disk I got from Microsoft.

    Hi, Ken.

If I recall correctly, there is no need for SP1 if you have the SP2 CD from Microsoft (or Microsoft's downloadable SP2 package). I expect you can slipstream the SP2 CD as I outlined in my "alternative method" linked above (with AutoStreamer).

If you decide to give it a try, please let us know how it goes. :)

    Nero 5.5.10.54

    Mailman,

I only have a DVD burner in my system, just one drive so I wont be able to use your method. I do have Nero version 5.5.10.54 so I am going to give it a shot tomorrow and will post back with the results.

ken545 and PeteC on the registry settings. Gotcha...makes sense.

I am used to our slightly more contained environment at work. I still occasionally do side jobs for home PCs but I don't always get the broad range of issues that home users bring into the picture.

On the slipstreaming idea...cool. We keep stock images of our PCs but one of those slipstreamed CDs with SP2 would be handy on occasion.

Also, the display properties tabs that are missing could be a policy/registry settings but that would be an odd thing to happen on accident.

The policy settings are under (in the group policy editor):
    User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Control Panel\
    Display.

I am both puzzled and concerned that you do not have a Dllcache folder in System32 and wonder how on earth your machine is running.

I have checked out both my desktop and my laptop ....

both have the folder dllcache in C:\Windows\System32 as I would expect and neither has the folder C:\windows\LastGood

Although LostUser's post re Group Policy is an outside chance my feeling is that you are heading towards a repair install - get that slipstreaming done :)

BTW - Mailman is correct - SP 2 is cumulative and there is no need for a copy of SP 1

    Hey Pete

Well, after much aggrevation and many hours I was finally able to create that slipstream disk, I redid the sourcepath to point to the CD and System File Checker ran just fine.

I still have no DLLcache in C:\windows\system32 and still have no display tab. Let me clarify that a little more, when I right click on the desktop and go to properties, all that come up is the display tab and its very limited, there is no option for the screensaver and all the other componants.

Do you feel that I should bypass the recovery console and do a windows repair??

    Thanks for all your help.

Just a sidenote, that group polices program is not available in XP Home unless I read it wrong, anyway, I dont have that either.

Folder options>view tab. UN-check "Hide protected operating system files(recommended). DllCache will appear in system32 folder.
