Periodically I get errors in Windows media center such that I can not access my TV tuner.

    1. Many times I get Tuner not available and if I reboot or even just open and close media center a few times then the problem goes away. This has been happening since June but I have just sort of ignored the problem.

    2. Current problem which I am unable to resolve, is that
when I launch Media center and try to acceess the TV, it tells me that the tuner is in use by another program. I have been unable to tell what that program would be. I did just (why did I do it, ) do a Windows Update to Media Center.

Jorjab - If your Media Center has been working and quit when you did the Rollup, you should do a restore back a day or so before you did that. If you Google the following: "Update Rollup for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (KB "} you will see a lot of people are having problems with it and many are not. I've tried it twice and each time it gutted my Media Center.

If it played well before you updated it will probably play well again when you remove the update.

As far as I know people are still working on a fix for those that are having this trouble. A lot like NET updates, so have problems and some don't.

I cannot do a system restore - it periodiacally will not work and this seems to be one of those times. What about add/remove programs uninstall the update. What kinds of problems can that cause?

It should cause no problem, just as any program can be installed.

I also installed the update twice, and two times I lost my MCE. As mentioned above, some have had no problems. I did not do a restore. I uninstalled, restarted my PC and all was well.

If that doesn't help you, there may be other things that can help you. Suggest you uninstall, reboot, and see if it is all well. Still, if it isn't, try again to restore to a couple days before you installed the update. If still no luck, think I might have a couple ideas for you to try. Don't give up. It can be solved.

After update uninstalled still no good and now indicates

    "component registration failure
    critical procees failure
some of files needed to play video or radio are corrupt "

None of my system restores work so that will not help either.

I guess restore will be my next problem to solve.

You mentioned other things to try?

OK, the information you have now is the trigger. Open your MCE and click Settings. Then go through the entire process of setting the MCE, just as you or somebody did when it was new.

The message about corrupt files and/or component registration failure is the answer. The Update changed some files necessary to run MCE. When you uninstalled it, files were removed, but the necessary files that you need weren't changed back to a good state. I have had to do this procedure only recently and it was not because of an update. I don't know why and I doubt Microsoft really knows. I solved my problem with doing what I suggested above. Restate your preferences in MCE Settings. Go through the entire process and finally you will get the "Finish" button. Once you finish, suggest you reboot.

If this doesn't fix the problem, which I'm sure it will, we'll try something else.

I really think you have it pinned down now and the solution is just a step away.

This does not work either. I had actually tried that before as well as just now.

    Internet connection: critical process failure

    TV signal :tuner not found.

    Next suggestion:

    I am done for tonight.

Also still get "component registration failure
    critical procees failure
some of files needed to play video or radio are corrupt "

I run this around in my Grey matter tonight. Get back to you tomorrow, hopefully. In the meantime maybe someone else will check in with help for a fix.

    Windows MCE

Was hoping it was just the setup. I need to know a couple of things from you. Are you familiar with SFC (System File Check) and how to run it? Also, do you have a Windows XP MCE Installation Disk? Not that you'll likely have to do that but will need it for a Repair. And are you familiar with doing a Windows Repair with the Disk? I'm assuming you are but want to be sure.

I suggest you do the SFC first. That is supposed to check for corrupt and missing files and could be the fix. If not, my next suggestion would be do a repair of the OS. If done correctly you won't lose any data, hopefully. If you have done that before, you may remember that the MCE part of it is installed/checked after the OS itself has completed. As a last resort, if you have a Dell machine born after December 2004 and before July 2005, (I think these are the dates), you should have the CD. Between these date you will have the Symantec/Dell Restore partition. That's good and bad. The good is that your PC will be restored to the factory ship state. The bad is you lose all you have added and even worse is you gain all the junk that was put there by Dell.

One other thing. Have you checked the Device Manager to see if your tuner is identified with a yellow explanation mark?

Post back and we'll get you started.

    Hi jorjab,

To get the restore function working, try the following:

Right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab and for the Monitored drive > settings. Move the slider left to 6% and reboot, then reset the slider back to 12%.

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to disable SR, reboot and re enable SR. That'll empty SR's folder losing all the restore points. On the reboot, SR will create an initial restore point.

After re-establishing SR, a way to test the Restore function:
Take any executable file (extension .exe) and burn it out and/or move it to the My Documents folder and delete it from it's original location. SR does not monitor files in My Documents folder regardless of file type.

You should give this a shot, trying first to save the most recent half of your restore points - there's no downside to it. Any other SR fix involves losing the restore points.

    Regards - Charles

device manager - tuner etc ok - had checked that before.

Not sure about running SFC, may have done time a while ago. so please explain what I should do - I can use "Help" to see about it but guidance would be nice in selecting the options.

Did not do install myself - came loaded as part of my Dell Dimension 8400 - purchased January 2005. All I had to do was the initial set up for the tuner which is easy to follow and do - Have done that several times since - each time it told me tuner not installed. That problem began last June or July sometime, so assume one of the updates for it fouled it up. Up till then it worked fine all the time.

CDs I have are Dell Dimension resource CD for device drivers Jan 2005, some other driver cds and System restore Operating System Reinstallation DVD ( they would not send me a cd) Windows XP Media center editions 2005 - Only says Dell on it, not mention Symantec. copyright date is 2004 whatever that may or may not mean.

Have not done a windows repair with disc - Have long ago installed from scratch NT 4.0 and 98 but that was at work when I could mess around and did not matter if I fouled it up.

Charles - Re Restore problem will get to that when I can.

After tomorrow will not be on PC till OCT 24 - so anything not done today or tomorrow will have to wait. Do not even want to contemplate the full reinstall of everything. Had done that with my old Gateway several years ago and hated it. Even tho I know there are people who do fresh reinstall every year or so.

IN other words assume I know almost nothing and take it from there.

I can always try Dell, as still under warranty but I have not enjoyed speaking to their support center in the past. Sometimes I appear to have known more than the person I was speaking to.

Much easier to get help this way -
    Thanks for your help

    Georgia

Georgia-Good information. I also have a Dell 8400 and have had to do this more than once.

I would first try the SFC. Should take 20 to 30 minutes. If no luck, then we'll go to a Repair.

SFC. Take the DVD that contains the Re-installation files. Place in in the DVD/CD tray. If it starts just cancel. Then START/RUN and type: sfc /scannow Notice the slash mark is next to the s, no space. Then Click OK. I don't know if your unit is configured for the i386 or the Disk on this. Either way it should run. Just to see what's going on, watch the light on the unit with your disk. When it begins to blink is usually when data is being changed. Be patient and wait until it finishes. Remove the CD. Suggest you restart. Try to open the MCE and check your tuner to see if it's OK. If not, you might try setting it up again after the SFC before going to the next try.

Take heart with this. I too have been puzzled with the MCE not working as it should. Seems sometime to have a mind of it's own! You can win over it.

This could also correct your problem in the System Restore.

Trying the sfc it runs under my C drive I386 but asks for the windows XP PRO CD. Is in my drive E - DVD drive Says that is not the correct one - Looking for files that need to be copied to the DLL cache. It appears to be trying to access DVD drive but not for very long. Just a flicker of the light.

I do not have PRO but Media Center SP2

Is this the correct CD - only OS one I have
If this won't work I guess I will have to call Dell, if not recognize the OS DVD.

Anything I can do from the DVD drive

DVD label says only use to reinstall Operating system - not for reinstallation of programs or drivers.

Restore did not restore anything after I tried just changing the size and back.
Have not tried new restore etc yet. My original size was 7

You mention "You should give this a shot, trying first to save the most recent half of your restore points - there's no downside to it. Any other SR fix involves losing the restore points. "
How do I save part of the restore points and tell which is what in Sys vol info restore points folder. are they the fifo files by the restore point dates?

    Hi jorjab,

If the original size was 7%, then expand it to 12%. The point of this exercise is to give SR enough room to create a larger than normal restore point. Its larger than normal because it carries the "undo" info in it. The usual assumption about SR disk allocation is that its set to the default size of 12% so contracting the size to 6% and then expanding the allocation size clears out the oldest half.

The restore points are cleared out on a fifo basis.

If it doesn't work, then you're back to where you are now. Then fixing SR, either by disabling/re enabling or by registering the .dll file for SR, will lose all the restore points.

    Regards - Charles

    Charles,
yes I had changed size from 7 down to 6 then rebooted and back up to 12. That is where I am now. Was not sure, if before I do full cleanup, if any way to save some of the fifo folders and copy them back in afterward.

Now is where we need Charles help. I had the problem you have with recognizing the DVD as a Boot CD. You will need to change the BIOS, Boot up part to be able to boot from the DVD. Is is not set that way from Dell. I did mine but to be honest it's been so long and I had trouble doing it I won't give you directions on this. The boot up section needs to be changed to accept a DVD to boot with. Dell did not set it this way, only to boot from a CD.

The Reinstallation DVD is XP Pro, with a couple of things changed, a couple of things changed, and Win Media Cen 2005 added. Trust me on this one, Win XP Medica Center 2005 is a Modified XP Pro. So people just swear it's Home or even something else. That's not so. I think we're stuck here until someone helps with the change in the startup boot. Or if you wish to skip SFC and go right to Repair, that's OK. Might be more beneficial anyway. Up to you.

CHARLES - Would you jump in and tell Jorjab how to change the BIOS to accept a DVD as boot? I won't dare. I'm willing to chance my own system, but not someone else.

    Hi Mudd and jorjab,

On a Dell, tapping the delete on bootup gets you into the BIOS.

Once there, use the vertical arrows to move to Boot.

Then the horizontal arrows to move up/down to the various boot devices listed with the option to make each device Primary, secondary, etc boot device.

Then exit saving the settings, its apparent once in there.

Regards and goodnight :) - Charles

Charles - Sure don't want to disagree with an Expert but maybe you have made a slight mistake on the BIOS. Once started on a 8400 Dell, wait until the F2 for Setup and F12 For Trouble shooting or something like that appears. Then press F2 for Setup.

I'm familiar with that. But she (think it's a she, named Georgia) will have a problem as 8400's are not configured to boot from a DVD. One has to change something further to get the DVD into the boot sector. I fought that for a long time and finally got it in there.

If she hasn't changed things, she has a CD ROM and a DVD/CD Writer, and the DVD will not boot the system until the change is made. I have forgotten just how I did it and an reluctant to give directions for someone else.:D
