Problem w/windows update failing

hello,
last couple of months windows update has been alerting me w/automatic update of patches but when i click on shield in system tray it says downloading updates but i never get notified of completion of download and wuctrl.exe i notice just terminates after several minutes. I can goto Microsoft Update site and download patches manually but its inconvenient. Strangely the periodic Windows Defender updates occur w/o a hitch. Anybody have any idea on how to get WU back on track. I'm running Windows XP SP2

Make the following two CMD files and run them with a restart in between.

 

thanx for the info. i ran the scripts as u advised. I ran a search for those error codes in update.log but didnt find those codes.Windows Defender complained about not being able to start after first reboot but then everything started ok when i started 2nd time. I'll have to wait until next patch tuesday to see if this worked unless u have some way of testing updates?
