I see that SP2 has added a small icon I have to click to shut off my computer without updates occurring automatically. Is there a way to remove this annoyance and just have the old SP1 sign-off box?

Go to the Control Panel > Automatic Windows Update > change the setting to "notify but do no more until I say so ". After that, you will get notifications of available updates but you will have to tell it to download and again to install.

    Hello

Another way to do this is to go to the Security Center via the Control Panel.

On the left, under Resources, click on "change the way Security Center alerts me ". In the Alert dialog box you'll see three alert settings. Unchecking there will disable the alert for the MS downloads no matter what setting you have for AU.

Christer's setting for AU is IMO the preferred one - should not automatically install updates w/o you knowing what they are and give you a chance to space them out.

Unchecking all the boxes disables the shield icon altogether.

    Regards - Charles
