    SP2 upgrade

In preparing for the SP2 upgrade, I just installed about 60 critical updates. The only ones I did not do were the ones which could not be undone since I was not sure if there was a problem with these.
    They are:
    KB 914798
    KB 873374
    KB 839645
MS .NET Framework 1.0 for SP3

Are these updates safe? I don't even know what .NET Framework is for or if I even have it on my laptop?

    Hello ackerberg,

SP2 contains the critical updates the were needed for SP1.

As for the ones you're waiting on - install SP2 first, then see if you need them afterwards.

These two are part of SP2:

    KB 873374
    KB 839645

    Regards - Charles

I thought that some of you who have not yet updated to SP2 might be interested in my recent experience. In the last couple of day I updated a Laptop running XP Pro SP1 and a desktop running XP Home SP1.
With the laptop, I first updated with all the XP Critical Updates of which there were about 58 and then I used a CD that I received from MS in Oct. 2005 to do the SP2. I first went into MSConfig and did a non-normal startup with no startup programs. The SP2 update took 1hour and 15minutes!!
I then did the Desktop without updating the MS Critical Updates, but I did the update in Safe mode because an MS technician said that was the safest way to do it. The SP2 update took 26 minutes! and then I had to do about 58 Critical updates, almost all of which were the ones I did for the laptop.
Conclusion: Do not do the critical updates before the SP2 update, for if you do, the SP2 update spends a lot of time looking over those critical updates before it finishes. I thought the SP2 update would never end and that is when I called MS. Just as a Tech got on the phone the update stopped.
I had no problem reconnecting to my wireless network. I disabled both the wireless card in my laptop and the network card in my desktop. Also, SP2 recognized that I had Norton Anti-Virus running after I did the update and suggested that I not use the Windows Firewall, a suggestion which I accepted. Let me know if you need any other details.

    ackerberg--Thanks for the guidance.
Just adding one thing to what you said. XP SP2 is cumulative with all updates as of the date the CD was made. As you found, it therefore is not necessary to update SP1 before installing SP. You do, however, have to update SP2 (as you did) to get the updates which occurred after the SP2 CD was made. Many of these are also cumulative, so that earlier versions of updates will be ignored and you will be offered only those now current.
