I had a crash but have my Money data on an external drive.

However, MS has set up rigid rules for restoring this file. It needs a passport password and ID and I don't remember it. I have tried setting up a new and am frustrated by every attempt. My email address is already on file, I've tried changing it but need another email account. I set up a Yahoo acct but this still doesn't get me there. \

IS THERE NO WAY FOR AN HONEST USER TO GET THIS DATA. I have a year's worth of data and dont want to have to enter it from my bank statements.

I use Money 2002 and it looks pretty straight forward for restoring a backup. If you have the external drive attached, then money should find the backup and let you restore it.

I went through the procedure up to the actual point of selecting one of my backups from another partition and doing the restore and it never asked my for any sort of password.

If you have Money installed and the external drive listed in Windows explorer then Money should be able to find it. You have to read carefully each pop-up for selecting the one you want to restore.

Where is the program letting you down?

When I tried to restore, it insisted on a MS Passport. I did at one time have a passport but never used it and didn't remember the ID or password.

Don't remember if it was a default choice or if I chose it ... but my Hotmail.com account and Passport account use the same credentials.

I just went in the back door by opening the backup file with money closed. Money opened and I selected File>Restore. It did not ask for my Passport account.

For a long time, every time I opened Money, the home page opened with my passport account ready to go online. I always had to click "work offline" as the only part of Money I use is the account register. I finally found in the options where I could open Money in my account register and I never had to put up with the passport page again.

I looked for a small program that would act as an account register and download my bank transactions. I was never able to find one without the bloat of investments and all that extra stuff I don't use. I would dump Money in an instant if I could find one.

Can you open a hotmail account? It would become your passport account and you could use it for Money.

I wonder if I should uninstall Money and start clean without a MS Passport at all. I would not lose anything since I dont have any data there now.

It couldn't hurt. When it starts to make a money file, just point it to your backup. I have reinstalled Money several times since I began using it.

I tried the last msg. you sent. I did not get the option on file>menu to NOT use or change my passport stuff.

I did get the option to contact Windows Live ID and have Support Ticket number. With that I assume that I will be getting response from MS Tech support. Thanks for you help so far.
