XP has just been reinstalled. Now, when trying to open sub folders, all folders have "search" as the top function, with "open" as the second.

I need to move open to the top and can't. Any ideas? (NB "open" is set as the default in "tools" > "folder options" > "file types ", but won't move!)
    thanks Ian

Try the registry edit on this MS Knowledge Base article.

Are you comfortable editing the registry? Please make sure either your "system restore" is functioning, or backup the registry or export the keys in questions before editing. Any questions on how to do this just ask.

    See:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321186

Or use kellys site and download and use line 18 on the right:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm or the direct link provided below:
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/folderopenssearch.reg

Problem with this fix is it only addresses one of the keys in question:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
    @= "none "

Let me go see if another site has a reg patch that includes both....back in a few....

Here we go Doug Knoxx has a more complete fix. See:
    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm

Downloading and running the vbs script will make the corrections in the registry for you. Makes it easier for those who are nervous when it comes to doing this manually. If curious you may peek into the downloaded script by opening in Notepad first.

    To David,
Sorry about giving the same microsoft link. I have been using dial up and depending upon the connection speed, site pages tend to open a bit slower than desired. I tend to click on links before the current page is completely loaded. Your thread was still blank by the time I scrolled to and clicked on the "post button ".

    Hi ianj,
Boy. this just seems to be my day for crossing paths with the original poster. Guess I was still editting my thread while you came and went. Please try the Doug Knox link and fix I previously gave. You won't have to enter the registry yourself. Just download the script and double click on it.

Thanks again. Editing the registry to <value=none> sorted it.
