I'm new here and was wondering if anyone could help me with this Vundo virus. I have McAfee and it always pops up letting me know it's there, but nothing takes it off my laptop. I've tried a number of things without any success. I also saw an older posting about the virus, but it wasn't much help for me, and was wondering if someone could lend a hand and help me out... please.

    Welcome to the forums CancerClimber.

Yes, Vundo in all its variants can be a bear to remove. We have a few tools which help us uncover it and remove it most of the time.

Here is how we like to start with analysis:

DL HiJackThis v:1.99.1zip file to your desktop, then create a new folder on your C drive, called 'HJT' or 'HijackThis'. Then unzip the files to the new folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Run the program, and press Scan. You will notice the Scan button will turn into a "Save Log" button. Save the log and Post that log onto this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in proper working order.

Ah, seems we have a problem. The version of HJT you have posted is an old out of date version and not from the link I gave you, please DL from that link and repost with a fresh log.

The newer version gives us more info about the system.

OK, lets now rename the Hijackthis exe to anything of your liking.

This Vundo infection has a tendancy with some variants to hide itself.

By renaming HJT, it slips past the process of being disabled. We will then know how to proceed and which tool, of the two available to use.

Sorry to ahve you kind of jumping thru hoops, but we alwayas like to proceed with caution.

Sounds good. I renamed it "helpplease" and here's the latest. Again... thank you...

Ok, we're going to try both Vundo tools and HJt to fix things.

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER, and not on the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click *VundoFix.exe* to run it.
    • Click the *Scan for Vundo* button.
    • Once it's done scanning, click the *Remove Vundo* button.
    • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click *YES*
    • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
    • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click *OK*.
    • Please post the contents of C:\*vundofix.txt* and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the *Scan for Vundo* button." when
    VundoFix appears at reboot

If the scan does not find any infected files then proceed as below, if it does remove files, skip to HJT fixing, skipping the next Vundo tool.

Download VirtumundoBegone and save it to your desktop.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

Then double click VirtumundoBeGone.exe you just downloaded and follow the instructions.

    Exit when it has finished.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

OK, lets try a fix with HJT in safe mode.

    Click OK.

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

Ok, looks like we're almost done.

Any files which have the same name, be they a .dll or an .exe, or any file extention, they are all bad and need to be deleted in this case. So any I tell you to search for, kill 'em dead!!

Lets Reboot, into 'Safe mode', run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

    O2 - BHO: SSL encrypt - {746455FE-D059-47e7-AF0E-140E03F5A447} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsb23.dll

Search for, and delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsb23.dll<<<--this file
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\brrot-unist.exe<<<--this file

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

Also let me know what if any problems you're experiencing.

Well, it looks fine now.....how is the machine running?? Let me know.

    Now for our recommendations.

One thing of Vital Importance, I notice your OS/IE is not properly updated, please go to the Windows Update page, and load up all 'Critical Updates'. As this will ensure your IE is as protected as is possible. Follow this link:
    Windows Update Page

We have 3 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.1.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

thanks so much. i did everything and i don't have pop-ups anymore, however i have something now that comes up with McAfee VirusScan:

    Program name: Adware-SurfSideKick
    File: DXCecho.exe
    File path: C:\WINDOWS
    Status: Cannot be cleaned

Verify that the file is not write-protected and try again.

I try to delete it, clean it, etc, but it's still there. ugh. I do appreciate your help with everything Tom, thank you... hope you're having a good weekend?!

Try deleting the file in safe mode, see if that gets it, if not try this:

    download the Killbox.
Save it to the desktop and run it.

    2) Select "Delete on Reboot ", and then select "All files ".

    3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
    C:\WINDOWS\DXCecho.exe

    4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard ".

    5) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Reboot, rerun your McAfee, let me know what if anything it finds.

And yes the weekend is going well, thanks for asking.:D

    Excellent news!!

Glad to hear all is well on your machine. And good luck with your presentation for work.
