I have on my desktop a shortcut icon to my internet provider (dial-up). How can I put this icon on my taskbar? I tried dragging it to the taskbar but it did not work. Thank you very much

abx--There are three different parts of the taskbar. To the right of the Start button is the area for Quick Launch icons (which are really shortcuts), but you have to set Quick Launch up, if you have not already done so.

    Display the Quick Launch Bar

You should be able to drag and drop any shortcut into the Quick Launch area.

To the left of the clock is the Notification Area (formerly System Tray). You cannot drag an icon into it. However, sometimes the program itself will have a setting (often under Preferences or Options) to deposit an icon there. But those icons may not act like shortcuts. It depends on the program.

In the middle of the taskbar you have the tabs showing what programs or Internet pages you have opened.

You should be able to left click and drag the icon to the Quick Launch bar - choose a spot inbetween two existing icons. Alternatively drag with the right mouse button held down and select Create Shortcuts here from the menu which appears when you release the mouse button.

If one of the existing icons disappears and a double chevron appears at the end of the Quick Launch bar right click on the Task Bar and uncheck 'Lock the Taskbar', adjust the length of the Quicklaunch bar to accomodate all the icons then lock the Taskbar again.

To WelshJim: Thank you for your message. I did what you suggested but now my taskbar is one inch wide. How can I narrow the width of my taskbar? Thank you.

Toolbars/icons_in_toolbars and the taskbar are drag-gable unless you've locked the taskbar. This is so you can adjust sizes and positions to your liking. Flip side is, a drag by mistake can mean having to rearrange things once again.

To return the taskbar to a single height, move your mouse to the top of the taskbar until you see an arrow. Press and hold your left mouse key down. Slowly drag the taskbar back down to single height. Once positioned and organized as desired, you can lock the taskbar in place by a right click option.
