    800 MHz, 128MB of RAM.
Clean install of 98SE on a 0 (zero) wiped HD. Even tried it with XP also. All updates done on both OS's. When it reboots while loading the OS, it acts like it is in hibernation. I have to manually shut it down with the power switch. Of I go to Start and then shut down, it will. If I choose Restart, it acts like it is shutting down and never does. It shuts the monitor down like it should but never does reboot. Did a BIOS to Default and still the same problem.

A friend of mine has the same experience. His machine runs WinXP and he has a mobile rack with a backup HDD. If the mobile rack is powered off, he can not do a restart (it hangs) but only a shut down - new start. We have tried different jumper settings for the HDDs but the issue persists. If the mobile rack is powered on (both HDDs running) it works as it should.

When I added a mobile rack, I had a similar issue but when I changed the jumper settings from MASTER/SLAVE to CABLE SELECT on both HDDs it worked.

You could try it but it requires 80-conductor IDE cables.

I only have one HD. When I had the problem with 98, I did a clean install of it. Then wiped it off and did a clean install of XP Pro.

Yes, but try changing the jumper anyway ... ;) ... it may be the solution!

    Hi MrBill,

    Do you have Hibernation enabled?

If so, try turning it off for both: in XP - Power options > Hibernate tab. Forgot where in 98 it is.

The hiberfil.sys file can be become corrupted and disabling will delete it. If that turns out to be the problem and you want Hibernation, try turning it on again. The problem may have been with the file.

Also look around in the Power Options setting if you haven't done so already.

I dual boot (two drives) and never had this problem. What a PITA it would be if I did :)

    Regards - Charles

Not a jumper problem. Put a different HD in and it does the same thing. Has to be something in the BIOS and I just can't seem to find it. Like I said before, I restored the BIOS to Default. The only other thing that I have changed in the BIOS is the boot order. C, CDROM, A

I had (now my daughter's) computer that did the same thing, Asus motherboard. It sounds like a similar system. If it is an Asus motherboard it is probably the same problem.

I fixed mine with a BIOS upgrade. If you have not done a BIOS upgrade before, read the instructions carefully and make certain the flash/upgrade is for your model of motherboard.

Window 98 SE Shut down fix

There is an inherent flaw in Windows 98 SE of "hanging on shutdown ".
A small file was released at some point by Microsoft to correct this error.
If you care to email me with your email adress I can email you the file/program.

I know that there is. I fixed it a yesterday. Found a crack in the MOBO and now it is in the MOBO cemetery with some other stuff that I took to the county yard to be recycled. Been busy and had kind of put it on the back burner. Thanks for the help to all anyways. I guess that the heat or the vibration from a fan cause it to go nuts. Make me go nuts with these types of problems...lol
