I have an ASUS L3800 laptop, and recently the keyboard stopped working in Windows XP. I installed Windows ME and the keyboard works as normal, i'm at the ends of my wits though using Windows ME, and i would really like XP to work.

Currently i'm typing on an external keyboard but what's the point of laptop if you have to carry a keyboad.
In the event log I see :

ID 18:WARNING : i8042prt - The device sent and incorrect response(s) following a keyboard reset.

ID 19:WARNING : i8042prt - Could not set the keyboard typematic rate and delay.

ID 20:WARNING : i8042prt - Could not set the keyboard indicator lights.

I was wondering if there was a patched version of i8042prt.sys that skips doing the keyboard reset because it seems that is where the problem arises, or a way to use the windows me keyboard driver in XP. Because it is obviously an XP issue because it works everywhere else. Needless to say i clean reinstalled a few times(with and without sp2, even used asus recovery cd) in fruitless efforts to get it working.

Another thing is that the keyboard show up in device manager as fully working

    Any help would be appreciated...
    thanks

    Hi,

In device manager properties for the keyboard, is "Allow the computer to turn off this device..." enabled? Or in the BIOS ACPI anything?

    If so, uncheck/disable.

First I thank all who contributed.
charles you seem to have the same hunch as me. But i'm using winme right now and it seems no key is being pressed automatically or it wouldn't it show up in this textbox. But i still figure its that key pressed issue, although i can't see it. Also i googled and i8042prt seems to be the problem because i tried version from Windows NT thru Windows XP SP2(Maybe Vista's will work???).
Is there a scancode detector to see if a key is being pressed ?, or a kernel level keylogger perhaps.

Arie the keyboard show up as fully working, btw on a funny sidenote, i noticed you can't disable the keyboard in windows xp. The asus bios is simple and probably has 7-9 configurable options in total, none of which are related to the keyboard. I disabled the touchpad in the bios to see if it was a conflicting device, it wasn't.

Thanks again, and appreciate everyones help.

    btw codecomments link down :)

    Hi daxt0r,

    Another hunch :)

When I was looking around on this, I came across references to a possible mouse issue with this.

Are you by any chance using a non MS mouse? Specifically a 5 button mouse.

    Regards - Charles

Actually i'm using the built-in touchpad, altough i attempted to get the keyboard to work via the disabling the touchpad in bios, neither worked :
