Can anyone help. I have just upgraded a friends machine from ME to XP.
Formated the hard drive in NTFS
    Installed XP
No problems or error messages through the whole thing.

Only problem is when i come to shut the machine down it hangs (well stops)on the Windows is shutting down screen and does not shut down. There are no error messages it just freezes up. I thought it might be one of the drivers but all are up to date and XP compatible. Installed SP2 and still have the same problem. The Pc is working better than it ever has to be fair apart from when it comes to shutting it down or restarting it.

Hello baxta and welcome to the Board :)

Does XP have any trouble shutting down in safe mode - no applications running.

If in Safe Mode no problem, then shut down the applications one by one trying the shutdown after each disable.

A general XP shutdown troubleshooting site: http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

XP just won't shut down. Even if you have just turned the computer on and shut it down or try to resart it straight away it freezes on that screen. I have looked at that website previous to finding this site. But unfortunatly none of the problems descrideb on that page tie in with the problem. There are no error messages its not slow on shutting down it just dosn't do it. when you say programs do you mean the system processes thrugh Ctl alt del?????

    Hi baxta,

You don't mention whether the system shuts down from safe mode - tap the F8 key on bootup.
    For shutting down processes:

Go into msconfig and shut down the startup processes there - these are 3rd party applications, should start with them.

From the Start menu, click on run.
    Type msconfig and ok.

Then in the System Configuration utility, click on the Start tab.

    Un check a program.

Afterwards when you boot up, you'll get a message from the System that you have changed the startups, tick the box on the left to shut the message off.

To shut a process down while running:

Hitting Ctl alt del will bring up XP's Task Manager. In the Process tab is a list of running processes. Clicking on Image Name will put the processes in alphabetical order. Do not at first try to end the following processes if present:

    smss.exe
    csrss.exe
    winlogon.exe
    services.exe
    lsass.exe

svchost.exe there will be multiple instances of svchost.exe

    explorer.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    logonmgr.exe
    devldr32.exe
    iexplore.exe
    wmiprvse.exe

    These are system processes.

    Regards - Charles

You have installed all the Win XP drivers? Even though the system runs and does not show error messages it does not mean that the drivers are working correctly.

Investigate, update or reinstall the motherboard/chipset drivers first, then the graphics drivers (then others).

    Hi baxta,

    Matt's points reminds me:

Did you ever run Check System Compatibility from the XP CD install disc?

If you haven't - insert the CD into a ROM drive, and a menu will come up.

Are there any yellow signs next to any device in Device Manager?

Right click MY Computer > Properties > Hardware tab > Device Manager Section.

    Regards - Charles
