I have an unusual problem with my computer. Some of the hyperlinks on webpages appear fragmented, ie where letters break up they appear light blue as opposed to the normal darker blue of hyperlinks. Interesting enough not so on this forum! It would occur on say a Google search page, or most other webpages. Very very occasionally my computer screen goes blank too but much less so now since I cleared out spyware. Any help appreciated.

Hello Devpro and welcome to the Board :)

You may have residual malware that would be causing the problems.

    Download and run HijackThis:

Download from here http://radiosplace.com/ latest version 1.99.1

Download it to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis

unzip (double click on zipped folder)

    click on the execute

click on Do a system scan and save a logfile and save to the folder you just created

copy resultant .txt file and paste into your next post

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Devpro,

I've moved your thread to the Malware removal section and added an indication to the title that there is a HJT log attached.

I do see one potential problem, you have an AVG process starting up. May be causing conflicts with Norton.

    C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVG7_CC] C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe /STARTUP

    You should disable that.

One of the security experts with look at your log in detail.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Devpro

    Welcome to windowsbbs

I agree with charles, running 2 anti-virus programs is not a good idea. they can cause conflicts.

You have a trojan on your system. It is a dialer so make sure you check your phone bill for excess or strange charges.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    O16 - DPF: {DB893839-10F0-4AF9-92FA-B23528F530AF} - http://deposito.trafficredlight.net/10256-69.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close HJT.

Please download ewido and run as instructed.

Download ewido anti-spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
    1. Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    2. Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
    3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
      • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    4. Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine ".
    6. Under "Reports "
      • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan "
      • Un-Select "Only if threats were found "
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.
    1. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
    2. Lauch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
    3. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan ".
    4. ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
    5. If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions "
    6. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
    7. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
    8. Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.

Please post the ewido report and a new HJT log into this thread.

Thanks Geri. I have followed your script to the word. I got rid of 016-DPF: {DB893839-10F0} having run HiJackThis. I then downloaded and ran Ewido anti-spyware. This I ran in safe mode. It bought up the list of spyware (cookies) all risked as 'Medium'. I applied all actions, clicked 'Reports' and was told there were no 'Reports'.
I have also removed Norton as I prefer AVG. Norton had expired anyway.

The fragmentation of hyperlinks is still apparent though. It's not bad and never has been in the last few weeks it has been apparent. The screen going blank for a few seconds at a time rarely happens. It was happening all the time as mentioned earlier on.

    Hi Devpro

You have Stopzilla, which is not a very good anti-spyware program, I have heard of problems with it and it also not doing a very good job of detecting or removing malware.

    I myself would remove it.

Did you do any downloads before the hyperlinks problem started?

    Let's get a on-line virus scan

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

would you post a new HJT log as well please.

Thanks Geri. Here is the list from the Kaspersky scan. 3 serious infections, 7 in total. I wonder why AVG Free Version hasn't picked them up? It is possible two of the infections have just happened as I had a load of 'Returned Mail' two days a go which I didn't send. I have the MS Patch link to download and block that gap.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q290108/default.asp

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q290108/default.asp

I have had to cut out a lot of the scan as the forum can't take it all. I have left the bit in that details infection. If you want it all I will have to mail it.

    Hi Devpro

First, I don't believe that is the patch you need.
It says that it is for IE 5.01. sp1 and 5.5 sp1. You are running IE 6 sp2. and that patch would have been included.

Those do show as being in OutLook, some in your In box some deleted items.

But they are like 1 and 2 years ago?
Those have been saved or archived in a outlook folder. Though I'm not sure they are a threat?
I will have to ask and see what our resident expert here says.

    C:\Backup\Documents and Settings\Dave Chamberlain\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst/Archive Folders....and...Personal Folders

That is what Kaspersky is finding.

    Hi Devpro

TeMerc does not believe they are a threat.

You should delete everything in these folders in your outlook boxes, If you do reopen them they could infect you system.

Your archived folder and your personal folders.

    Geri

Now as far as the hyperlinks.
If you point your cruser at them, does it say at the bottom of your browser where the hyperlinks are pointing to?

Thanks. When I point at a fragmented hyperlink, for instance on a search engine search page, the destination shown at the bottom of the page is the same as the hyperlink so I have no reason to believe there is an issue in that regard.

I downloaded a trial version of Kaspersky last night. It has been scanning for 8 hours and is still only 13% complete. Is it because it does a deep scan?

    All the best

    Dave.

No I don't believe that is the cause.
I have heard of this happening. It could be because of you running the 2 AV's.
I would delete Kaspersky and stay with AVG only as a anti-virus.

I don't believe the fragmentation of the hyperlinks is being caused by malware or a virus at this point.

Kaspersky, ewido, and your AVG and the HJT logs do not come up with anything. and you did not indacate any downloads just before this started.

I think you should post this problem in the "OutLook" form (not sure if that is where charles moved it from?) The people there may have a better idea then I would, because that is what they do.

    Geri

I removed AVG, though only after installing Kav. It is still scanning and says it will complete on the 6th October, three days from now!

    Hi Dave,

If you want to keep KAV, you're going to have to start from the beginning with it and do it right.

Go to the KAV forums and explain what the situation is.
