Hello, I'm new here and would appreciate any help that anyone might provide on this issue.

I'm running XP home, SP2 with all critical updates to date.

Recently, I decided to clean up all the Sun Java runtime entries from Add/Remove programs. The oldest was 1_4_2, and there were several other entries with the most recent being 1_5_08. I removed all of them, intending to reinstall only the most recent update as a matter of trying to keep my computer secure.

Since doing this, I have tried everything that I can think of to get the 1_5_08 version to reinstall. Nothing works! I get a 1722 error as the install attempt is nearing the end. It aborts the install, but not before adding an entry to Add/Remove programs as well as installing several folders on the C drive.

If I try to run the installer again, it says I already have the version installed. If I try to uninstall what has been installed, it is very difficult to delete one of the Java folders that has been created.

The file, RegUtils.dll is contained in the folder and it appears that it must be being used by another program and won't uninstall, even though I have tried a number of utilities that are good at removing stubborn files like this.

The only way that I've been able to delete that folder is by using Ice Sword and deleting the folder through the Ice Sword gui.

After removing all the sun java related folders manually and making sure that the entry is gone from Add/Remove programs, I try again to do an offline install with the same 1722 error every time.

I've also tried installing to a different folder as is suggested for this error at the Sun site. It still gives me the same error. I've tried the online installer, offline installer, deleting some registry entries(not sure which are strictly related to Sun Java, so I've tried to be careful in that regard).

Tried emailing sun, but just got a generic response rehashing things I've already tried.

Does anyone know how to get around this 1722 error??

Sure could use some help on this one because I seem to be running up against a brick wall!..........

Any help would sure be appreciated. Thanks!

    Hello fullabull,
    welcome to WindowsBBS ... :) ... !

Please, see the thread Sun Java Version 5.0 Update 7 for a discussion on Sun Java versions, which is available where and that whichever you have installed tests to be the most recent.

I would suggest a visit to JAVA SOFTWARE MANUAL DOWNLOAD. Download and try to install the currently available version (last time I checked = jre-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p.exe).

I'm running 1.5.0_07 which was available a few weeks/months ago but since that time, it has been rolled back to 1.5.0_06. I have never seen 1.5.0_08 in my recommended download location.

If it works, I wouldn't worry about not having the most recent version ... ... but what you worry about is your decision!

Thanks Christer. I already scoped out that thread before I posted and found it to be interesting. It doesn't address the problem that I am having with my computer though.

I have tried the manual download of 1.5.0_06, and 1.5.0_08, and a few other builds as well. The only one that would install is 1.4.0, but it is not updateable. So I uninstalled it and am still trying to get to a solution for why I continue to get the 1722 error when I try to install. Even 1.4.0_02 gives the 1722 error.

At this juncture, I just want to get a fairly recent version to install without getting the blasted 1722 error!

    Thanks for your help.

OK PeteC. I already had that version of Windows Installer 3.1 v2 installed, but I went ahead and refreshed the install and tried again with jre 1.5.0_08 with the same resulting 1722 error.

After getting the error, I used the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to delete the jre 1.5.0_08 entry from Add/Remove programs.

Then, combed through my C drive and deleted these folders:

    Current User/Local Settings/Application Data/Sun/Java/jre1.5.0_08 which contains jre1.5.0_08.msi

    Program Files/Common Files/Java/Update/Base Images/jre1.5.0.b64/patch
    which contains jre1.5.0_08b03

Program File/Java/jre1.5.0_08/bin which contains RegUtils.dll and is difficult to delete or rename.

This last entry seems to be in use by another program or something and has to be brute force deleted with Ice Sword.

This has been the general situation every time I try to reinstall. I would dig into the registry and try to clean up any Sun Java entries there, but I'm not sure exactly which ones to go after.

I'm stubborn, so I'll keep looking for the answer.

    Thanks for helping.

Thanks for the link, Welshjim. I have been googling this problem a lot, but there are a few things in the links that I haven't tried yet. I may try copying some of the java files from my laptop to my desktop to see if that will allow the installation to complete.

UPDATE: I tried copying the Java folder from my laptop to my desktop and then reinstalling 1.5.0_08. Got the same 1722 error as before!!

This problem is wearing on my nerves! UPDATE: On my last nerve...

    Thanks again for helping!

I too had a problem with the Sun Java installation. I did not get an error message but I couldn't view any java websites. I did the verifier on the Sun site and it said I was using an older version however, when I checked for updates it said that it was up to date and I was using the latest version(update 6) go figure

I did successfully download and install Update 8 and now my java sites work fine in IE. When I installed it, it had check marks to install for IE, Mozilla and Netscape which are all installed on my computer.

But when checking the java console the Mozilla or Netscape options are not checked and when I try to check them it says to be sure the programs are installed correctly and/or I did not have permission to change it

I am the only user on this computer so why wouldn't I have permission to change these options? I installed it from my user name therefor I should have permission to change the options.

Bottom line is that I cannot use Mozilla or Netscape for sites that use the java applet. How can I fix this? I don't find a tab for permissions in properties for this program.

    Hey there, whompuscat!

It seems like your luck has been a little bit better than mine. At least you have been able to INSTALL it on your computer.

Something you might look into regarding permissions is to find the registry locations for your sun java install and right click on them. I think you can adjust permissions on a case by case basis this way. I had to do it once in order to get Quicktime to install. It was a similar hassle to this one, but so far this one is even worse!!

After I installed java update 8, I uninstalled Mozilla and Netscape and then redownloaded them and reinstalled.

All seems to work great now, but what a hassle, I have turned auto update off in java.
