I can't open the door of my CD-ROM/CD-RW. A green light comes on briefly when I boot up but stays off after that. The door doesn't open when I boot down. All cables inside seem to be connected ok, nothing loose. Any suggestions?

Unfortunately there is none. Only a hole for ear phones.

Try enabling or disabling the DMA setting for your CDRW - which ever way it is now, switch it. If that doesn't work, contact your mfg and get specific information for the jumper settings on the PIO pins - mfg's tech support will know what this is and no, it won't be in your manual.

If after that you still can't open it normally or you can't open it by right clicking on the device itself and selecting eject, its time for an RMA and a new drive.

Daizy - would that make his thing poke out?

Hey, is it getting a bit adult in here? LOL!
Have you tried hitting eject during boot up? In safe mode?

Thanks for all your answers. I have changed the DMA setting to no avail. I did not know you could eject by right clicking on the drive. So I did that and the door did indeed open. I put a CD in the tray; had to push it to close. The drive however remained inaccessible - I was unable to format the CD. So I guess I am going to have to buy a new drive. Any recommendations anybody?

Not so fast - don't trash it yet. Uninstall your CDRW software then go here and download RegCleaner.

    http://www.jv16.org/

Install it, reboot and run it. Take out any references to your CDRW software. Reboot. Shut down all running programs except explorer and systray. Reinstall your CDRW software.

If you still have the problem, get an RMA from the drive mfg and return it for a new one. If its more than a year since you bought it - trash it. Buy a LITE ON 40x12x48 for $67 at NewEgg. Very reliable drive.

Daizy - Thanks for the encouragement. I like your style and I'll guarantee he's got a hole. (he just hasn't found it yet)

Thanks, Daizy, I know exactly which hole you meant, but it's not there.

Thanks for all your answers. I could not revive my CDRW drive; it was too old and slow anyway and I ordered a new one, a TEAC drive, which according to CNet got great reviews. The LITE ON drive looked very good too, but it doesn't fit into the bay on my computer.

    What I ran into.

Does the drive happen to have a CD in it ?

And that CD being a CD RW ?

If so try opening My Computer, Right click on the CDROM and select " EJECT. "

My RW CDs WILL NOT come out of any drive I put them in unless I do the above. The buttons just will not work.

I can eject the disc; the tray comes out when I right click on "Eject ", but whatever disc I put in (and push the tray back in), it won't play. The drive remains inaccessible or "not ready ".

Let's give this one more shot.

First off check the Config.sys for a line containing the CDROM Driver.

If there but REM and a space at the front of the line.

Shut down ( power off ) and restart

IF still no CDROM go to the device manager and remove the CDROM drive.

While in the Device Manger check for yellow marks on the IDE controlers. If any are there the CDROM problem will not fix till the yellow is gone.

Shut the machine down ( power off ).

If the CDROM does not get picked up and work it is time for a
    new one.

BTW. If you are using Windows ME forget the Config.sys part. Me it won't allow it.
