    Hello,
I have a problem with my computer. I can't get the computer to boot into safe mode. If I boot into the "normal" safe mode then I get this error:
    Code:
    A problem is preventing Windows
from accurately checking the license for
    this computer. Error Code: 0x80070013
If I try safe mode with network I get this one:
    Code:
Windows cannot create a temporary profile directory.
This may be caused by insufficient security rights.
If this problem presists, contact your network administrator.
When I boot normal (no safe mode) I have no problems...

A while ago I played around with the security settings of the folders on the computer, and I think I messed something up there, but I don't know how to reset them.

The computer is running XP Pro with SP2

    Thx in advance
    Greetings
    Tom

Looks like that might be the problem.

Now I don't really know what to do about it, never run into it. I found this on the Microsoft Knowledge Base: "Error Code: 0x80070002" error message cites license-checking issue after upgrade on Dell computer.

I'd suggest you make sure you have a backup of your data before fooling around with this, as it might cause you to loose access to Windows altogether.

I tried the KB-article, but I don't have those keys.

I always have a backup of my data, it's not the first time I messed something up :D
But, you can't learn without trying ;)

    Hello Tom,

Depending on how much time A while ago is, give System Restore a shot if you have it enabled. If you're not familiar with its use, type System Restore into XP's Help & Support search box.

Keep in mind that any use of SR will "roll back" MS updates, program installs, and any system changes, so they would have to be done again.

    Regards - Charles

If a system restore doesn't do it and you are a risk taker with the adequate backups done as you've stated and, more importantly, keeping in mind that you face locking yourself out of windows even in normal mode, here's something you may wish to consider. Note I'm not sure if there will be or are any sp2 issues to consider. You may wish to further explore that mine field yourself or wait for others opinions on the advisability of using the procedures described below.

Note After security settings are applied, you cannot undo the changes without restoring from a backup. If you are uncertain about resetting your security settings back to the default security settings, you must make a complete backup that includes the "System State " (the registry files).

Suggestion if you have "no faith in" or "no backup software" or "plan ":

I do hope you aren't about to 'learn " a lesson from the "School of Hard Knocks ".

Sorry for the late answer, I have been very busy for the last couple of days

It has been a couple of months since I changed the security settings, so probably to long for a system restore without damaging other things. And I don't know the exact date, so I don't know what point to restore.

It tried resetting the security settings, and I think it worked, I saw changes in the settings, but I still get the same error when I boot in safe mode.

Thank you everybody for the help!!
