Hi, I am having trouble networking my windows 2000 host with my windows xp pro client. I am using an ethernet adapter to create a connection. At first when I set up my local area network my xp pro pc could use the internet and share files now it can do neither. I thought it was my firewall but I have added the network adapter to trusted and even shut it down. I think the problem is that I don't have a dhcp server on my win 2000 host. If this is my problem does anyone know how to install a dhcp server.

Anyway these are my Ip configurations:

    Windows 2000 host....

    Ethernet Adapter Local area connection:
    Connection-specific DNS suffix
Description: Via Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
    Physical Address: 00-0A-E6-99-F3-3C
    DHCP Enabled: No
    IP Address: 192.168.0.1
    Subnet Mask:255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway:
    DNS Servers:

    PPP Adapter xtraltd:
    Connection-specific DNS suffix
    Description: WAN <PPP/SLIP> Interface
    Physical Address: 00-53-45-00-00-00
    DHCP Enabled: No
    IP Address: 210.54.117.232
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255
    Default Gateway: 210.54.117.232
    DNS Servers: 202.27.158.40
    202.27.156.72

    XP PRO Client...

    Windows Ip Configuration
    Host name: ef001
    Primary Dns Suffix:
    Node Type: Mixed
    Ip routing enabled: No
    WINS Proxy Enabled: NO

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection
    Connection specific DNS Suffix
Description: Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
    Physical Address: 00-05-1C-1A-62-8E
    Dhcp Enabled: Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes
    Autoconfiguration IP Address: 169.254.16.169
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
    Default Gateway:

I have also tried the /release and /renew however when I enter /renew it says 'an error occurred while renewing interface loca area connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.' on my xp client.

I've read other forums with people using the same set up as me and similar problem however they don't seem to say how they fix it, it just seems to go away. I've had this problem for like a month now. Anyone had this problem and know ho0w to fix it?

It looks as though your 2000 PC is no longer offering all the intenet connection sharing services.

The first thing I would try is setting the IP address manually for the problem XP PC. Set the system up as:

    IP Address: 192.168.0.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
    DNS Servers: 202.27.158.40
    202.27.156.72
