I keep a pretty lean system -- only two startup items, for example.

But I'm interested in possibly using a program like Ashampoo to not only clean the registry but delete unneeded garbage files and perform other optimization proceedures.

Does anyone know if a) Ashampoo and similar programs actually help to improve performance and reduce instability, and b) they're safe to use?

    Thanks for any advice.

    My 2 cents worth ...

Leave well alone - from time to time I clean up the registry with jv16 PowerTools and can't say that I see any performance increase. My system is very stable - with or without registry cleaning.

Thanks, Pete. I needed somebody to talk me out of it. You see, I go back to the days of CP/M and QEMM and I guess I just got an itch to start playing around again with the system. But it's probably not worth it, because my system is not only lean, it's stable, and boots up in about 20 seconds.

So I'll resist the urge to fix what ain't broken.

    Hi dkline,

Good for you, cluttered systems with gratuitious startups is one of my neuralgia points. Every additional process increases the possibility of instability.

    Regards - Charles

    Hey Charles, how you doing?

And yeah, all those vendors who pollute systems with startup programs make my blood boil. My mother-in-law had a PC that ran slower -- I kid you not -- than a Win. 3.1 PC from the early 90s.

    What's wrong, she asked me?

Turned out she had at least 30 startup programs and a quick launch bar that stretched from California to Ohio. I whittled it down to two programs and turned off most of her services (especially indexing). Things perked up quite a bit after that.

IMHO, Most wrk fine for me. However, you do have to watch conflicting them...lol I mixed Tune Up Utilities, a nother really good choice, with Ashampoo, that I found out I liked also, However....they didnt care to much for each other.....lol I am an optimizer at heart tho, like it to run it's best. I just back up and wish the best and when it don't happen, reformat. If you've backed up...what's to lose?:D
