I really don't know where to start, other than explain where my windows 98 computer is today plus a little bit of background. Two weeks ago, it would only start in safe mode. I used the restore disk and cd that my computer guy gave me when he installed windows 98se in February 2006. Still would hang up and not load windows. I re-installed windows in a new folder and finally was able to start windows. I had prepared myself for loss of all data, however it was still there. Prior to 2-06 I had tried to install windows 98, but the display properties would never let me adjust above 16 colors. I removed devices, drivers more than once, restart and re-install the drivers with the same results. This is the problem once again. what is "winbk" ? What am I doing wrong?

From reading your post, I'm not sure what the problem is...If it's the color issue, you need to install video card drivers for your video card.

Geez, I re-read my post and understand why you don't understand! Today, my problem is display related. In Display properties I have the choice of 2 colors or 16 colors. This same situation happened when I installed w98 at the beginning of the year. I then took it to the local computer guy and asked him to install windows 98 for me. He did and the display was 256 or so colors. He didn't have my monitor. I then had problems with windows 98 2 weeks ago, would only start in safe mode. I re-installed w98 in a new folder and it works, but back to the 16 color arrangement. I have tried updating drivers for my display adapter (computer says it is a standard pci graphics adapter) Under driver file details it has 2 listed:
    c:\win98\system\vga.drv
    c:\win98\system\vmm32.vxd (vdd.vxd)
I truly hope this helps you figure out what I am having problems with. If not, I will try again tomorrow. The processor I have in my head isn't running very well today.
    Thanks.

It is like Steve has said, you need to install your video drivers.
The display driver you currently have is what windows defaults to when it doesn't have the required drivers for the card you do have. You need to find out what card you do have.
Get Everest, it may tell you.

Using Everest go to the Reports menu, select Quick Report, copy and paste the contents in your reply.

Fireaxe did this in the thread "Resolution Won't Change ". It may have some information to help identify the graphics adapter.
