I am trying to organise files on my ftp site and am having trouble moving files from one directory to another.

I can open ftp site in a browser window and upload by dragging from local directory to ftp directory but cannot move from 1 ftp directory to another ftp directory. Likewise copy, paste, delete doesn't work.

Smart ftp client allows me to copy but it would be much easier to move without download and upload.

I am running XP with DSL connection.

    Thanks for any input

I just downloaded the SmartFTP client and installed it in one of my computer(xp home sp2).

There is no problem with draging files from one folder to another.

    I selected full installaion.

Did you get any error message?

    moving files on ftp site

I was opening a 2nd browser and then moving from 1st browser to 2nd. I tried moving to the folder in the same browser and that works great.

Sometimes we try to make things more difficult than they need to be.

    Thanks for your help.

If use IE for ftp you CAN move files from one dir to another, just use cut+paste instead of copy+paste.

Still can't get IE to work. Cut and paste, paste is greyed out and no action, same as copy and paste.

Correct, copy, cut & paste are unavailable in the context & edit menus, my mistake. (I just tested it) I rarely use IE FTP, I prefer FTPXplorer or WinSCP. IE FTP is very limited.

The FTP Folders feature does not support the following functionality:
    • Connecting to the Internet using a CERN proxy server or Web proxy server.
    • Connecting to a Virtual Address Extension (VAX) or Virtual Memory System (VMS) FTP server.
    • Using Internet Explorer from within a separate program or service.
    • Copying files from one server to another.
    • Drag and drop functionality from an FTP server.
    • The Copy command on the Edit menu and context menus does not work for files on an FTP server, but you are able to copy files locally and paste them on an FTP server.
