I have an Icon on my desktop that I cannot find the file for. Is there a way to do this? It is not in "properties-change icon ".

It is a saved internet site (URL) that came with the icon, now the site icon has changed and I like the old one that is on this PC and I wanted to save it to a specific location so I would not loose it. I have the new one also but on another computer.

Look in the properties again. Is there a Wed Doc tab? If so, you will find the change icon button.

Yes there is a 'Web Doc' tab and I click on change icon and the path is:
    %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll

This is where the default XP icons hang out.

Then click the Browse button and browse to the icon you want to use.

It might have been in the temp folder...Have you considered going back to the site and re-creating the shortcut?

In message #8 I mentioned it might have been in the temp folder;) If you've cleared your temp files...it's gone with the wind.

OLDSALTY--The following link is for Win98, but much is still correct for WinXP.
    http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/iconlist.html
That will tell you where most icons are located on your PC. Unfortunately it is usually not possible to just open these folders and view/choose the icons. However, when you are offered a button to Change Icon (such as on some shortcut or program tabs) you can Browse to the folders mentioned, and choose the one you want by clicking on it.

When you initially create a url shortcut, if it has a Favicon, it will be found in your Temporary Internet Files folder. You can easily find it by using Explorer to view the files and clicking on the "Type" column so as to arrange the files for easy browsing. Then just browse to the Icon files (ico extensions) and you should see the one you need. It will be there until the Windows chooses to clean it out based on the setting it has.

If you want the icon for a longer period, you will have to copy it to a folder of your choice and then point to that folder and icon file to replace the original.

Time is of the essence lest it goes poof.

The icon is on my desktop even after I delete internet temp files. This was the Favicon for Windows BBS when it was the blue and yellow box with the check mark. I don't like the new Favicon and it looks similar to others I have. The original was unique and I always knew where it went.

I know which one you're talking about. But, if you don't have it on your computer, there's no way to get it unless Arie would send it to you. I was thinking it was gone too because of the temporary internet files thing but it seems to me there's been another change to it before the current one and you should have lost it a long time ago. If that's the case, you should have lost the old one a while ago. The image below is a pic of the one that was being used before the most recent change. LOL, maybe I'm wrong and this was the first one. Somebody here might know.

Anyway, you can use this one though if you want. You'd have to use a program like Irfanview to convert it to an ico file first though. Either that or you could PM me and I could email you a copy of it. It's the best I can do. :)

Thanks. It is still on my desktop on this computer and has been for a long time. I have deleted temp files and I reboot each morning when I get to work and there it is. Now where is it on my computer? I attached a screen shot.

OLDSALTY--Run a Search for *.ico. The chances are good you will find the old WindowsBBS icon.

Been there done that. Did you look at the screen shot I attached? How can an icon be on the desktop and there be no file? I think I know why I am still displaying the old W-BBS favicon, my desktop shortcut is read only. If I open windows explorer and click on desktop the W-BBS icon is different than the one on the screen desktop. Maybe I should just ask Arie for the old one. and quit banging my head against the screen.

I don't have a copy of it, it was the default icon used in older vBbulletin software. If you search around the 'Net, I'm sure you can find boards that still use the older software.
