About every third startup of WinXP Pro SP2, my PC audio card (Soundmax on Intel 82815 motherboard) makes a screeching sound, similar to DSL modem communication. This problem goes away after restarting XP. Anyone else have this problem, and if so, any ideas on how to fix it, outside of replacing the sound card? Does anyone have drivers that may fix the problem?

It's an onboard sound card attached to the intel board. I have cured the problem by installing a new audio card. Thanks for your reply.
