Hi,

I have used FSTW a few times when doing a fresh install on my laptop, with success. However this time I am having major problems:

I created the image files with the wizard and stored it on my D drive - a physically seperate HDD. I then ran my Norton Ghost Image to resinstall my system back to how it was when I first bought it; as mentioned, I have done this several times before with no problem.

Now I have a clean installation of xp pro I am trying to import my old settings using FSTW, however all I get is the following message on a pop-up dialogue box:

"The location that you specified does not contain stored information. Please type a valid folder path into the edit box.

If you entered a path to a folder on a removable disk, the disk must be in the drive. "

This is the path in the browse box:

    D:\TOM'S FILES AND SETTINGS\USMT2.UNC

The folder USMT2.UNC contains 4 DAT files and a status file, all totaling just over 6gb - FSTW copied files that I didn't want it to copy, but that is another issue. As I have now got a clean installation on my laptop all my important settings that are stored in my Application folder are inaccessbile due to FSTW not being able to find its own image files.

When I created the image files on my old installation I was running xp sp2 with all current microsoft updates, which is also my current configuration.

I hope someone has any idea what to do, as I am stuck. I've trawled the internet with Google to try and find the answer but, with no success.

    Cheers
    Marconi.

I am a little worried about the folder path 8.3 naming conformance for FAST:

    D:\TOM'S FILES AND SETTINGS\

The spaces and apostrophe are likely not good idea with a conversion utility.

In any case, see MS-MVP Ramesh's notes: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fast.htm

    Hi Bill,

Thanks for the reply. I understand that DOS only recognises file names of no more than 8 characters, but I thought that the idea of windows is so that you can use different file names to make it easier for the non-programmer user - as I said I've not had this problem before using similar file naming syntaxes.

Nevertheless, I have also tried moving the USMT2.UNC so it just sits on the D drive without being in any other directory (D:\USMT2.UNC), but FSTW still says the same error!

I've had a look at the suggested link and notes and am trying to work out how to use fastconv, however it seems to be a converting tool for weights and measurements. I have tried the command line with the suggested changes, but nothing happens! It seems that you need to be a programmer to work it, and that I am not.

Again thanks for the advice, I'll get back if I still can't sort it out. Otherwise I will have to spend time reconfiguring Nuendo media production tools.

    Regards
    Marconi.
