I may have to flash, right?

I think I may have to flash my BIOS.

For some reason, probably due to the OS upgrade, my computer doesn't seem to be recognizing the dual processor anymore. Task manager won't let me set affinity, and it'll only show one graph. Yet when I check my computer info, it clearly shows that the computer recognizes it as a dual core.

If it matters, it is a Gateway 5028 AMD Athlon 64X Dual Core 3800+.

Do I have to flash to get it to recognize it again? I'd hate to have to do a whole reformat and reinstall.

I tried that, but unfortunately, it is only for XP. I may be out of luck until Vista is released retail. Thankfully I don't do anything heavy or play as many games as I used to. :)

I'm dual booting to Vista RC 1, but have not checked out that aspect of the installation - will do so and post back.

Interesting - I am able to set affinity on Windows standard processes at least - the only other software I have installed on Vista, apart from av is Office 2007.

My processor is AMD 64 x2 4200+ and the driver amdk8.sys and it is a bog standatd install straight from the DVD. I didn't check out the graphing, but will do so if you wish.

I have no idea why you cannot set affinity - Vista is far too new :)

Hmmm. I may have to bite the bullet and reformat. Get my recovery CD out, install Win XP, then Vista right from the get go. I don't like dual-booting; last two times I tried my PC ******* up severly. The BIOS somehow got messed, which caused my video card to not work, which caused me to spend two hours hunting down an old one just to boot into the BIOS and be able to see it.

Guess I'll stop at the store and buy a few DVDs so I can backup all my stuff. With 50GB left on a 228GB harddrive, that's quite a lot to back up. :(

Seriously consider partitioning your drive and keeping your data on a separate partition. Does not obviate the need for regular backups though, just enables you to format and reinstall the OS without data loss.

Consider an external drive for backing up all that data.

There's not really that much data. A small chunk is taken up by games, a fairly big chunk from music, videos, pictures (I take my computer with me quite a lot so I copy my DVDs to my harddrive to watch them without needing to physically transport the DVD). And I'm sure more than 70% of that is taken up by unused programs or files left behind, knowing how Windows and the registry handle things. ;)
