I was uploading the latest update for Adobe Reader and after a reboot, my fonts folder went all wonky. The icons no longer look like the True Type and Open Type icons--now they are the unrecognized program icon. The folder takes better than 20 minutes to even open.

When I installed the Adobe Reader update, I had too many fonts installed--I was unaware that there was such a thing. (I'm ashamed to admit that there were better than 1300 fonts installed.) I have deleted the majority of those fonts, keeping the ones that are necessary for Windows XP and a few others. Still no luck with the Fonts folder.

I've tried doing System Restore and no matter which checkpoint I choose, the program always tells me that it cannot restore to that point.

I'm stuck. Can someone tell me what to do next? Please?

    Hello maggieandmommy,

Quite aside from this problem, you should get SR to work again.

To get the restore function working, try the following:

Right click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore tab and for the Monitored drive > settings. Move the slider left to 6% and reboot, then reset the slider back to 12%.

If that doesn't work, then you'll have to disable SR, reboot and re enable SR. That'll empty SR's folder losing all the restore points. On the reboot, SR will create an initial restore point.

After re-establishing SR, a way to test the Restore function:
Take any executable file ( extension .exe) , and burn it out and/or move it to the My Documents folder and delete it from it's original location. SR does not monitor files in My Documents folder regardless of file type.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Bill,

If you mean moving the slider and emptying the earliest restore points and then back to the default 12%, my experience is that it works about half the time, more or less :) If you would do a search here for system restore using my user name, you'll see that's about right.

Of course there can be a lot of reasons for Restore not working - there can be corrupted points in the chain, etc, but one of them is that the algorithm that empties the earliest restore points doesn't work all the time. Emptying manually insures there is room for the new restore point the system creates which is larger than normal because it carries the "undo" info.

    Regards - Charles

From the original poster, the original post:
Charles, you can move the slider all you want. It will not repair this issue from the OP.

That was my point above, and nothing you have said will convince me that moving the filestore allocation slider will repair this.

I started with Font Doctor to see if that would resolve the problem (thinking that I would work on System Restore later). Font Doctor freezes every time I try to load it, though.

A friend suggested that this problem would probably require a reinstall. Do you guys think that that's the most likely outcome of all of this? I'm not sure how familiar my friend is with the behind-the-scenes workings, so I thought I'd ask your opinions, too.

Thank you so much for the advice and guidance! I'm planning to work on this more this evening as well.

    Hi maggieandmommy,

Sorry for not getting back to this thread sooner.

Before doing a re install, you should give SR a shot, trying first to save the most recent half of your restore points - there's no downside to it. Any other SR fix involves losing the restore points which in your situation would be beside the point :)

    Regards - Charles
