i recently had an issue with random files on my c drive going corrupt and becoming unreadable. i have a collection of digital video archived in about 20 folders within one folder. file by file they became unreadable. i downloaded every file recovery program i could find, nothing. chkdsk doesnt run because it says the drive is in use, and when i type 'y' to run the scan at startup, it either doesnt run or starts and just stops. norton disk doctor also does no good. i tried booting in safe mode but that didn't work either. now, whenever i try to boot (safe mode or not), the screen goes blue, freezes, and restarts before xp even boots. i am beginning to think that its a hard drive problem, but if i install xp fresh on another drive will i be able to fish my files off of it and recover the corrupted ones? any suggestions would be great. thanks

I think you will find that it runs off a floppy or CD at boot and is not dependant on Windows loading. You will need to check out the specific diagnostic software for your drive for confirmation.

thanks for your help. any idea why only video files in one folder would be corrupted rather than random files scattered across the hard drive?
