I'm having a little problem in the place I work.
My PC have a Windows XP SP2, and it's connected to the network with DHCP. I have Internet connection, but I can't see the others computer that are connected.
We use Workgroup name, and my PC it's connected to it.

This computer is used by many employeers, and I don't know if anyone turn off a service or installed something.
It's there a list of required services to see Workgroup computers?

    Thanks

Can you connect to shared directories on other computers?
    Can you ping them?
    Where are you looking?

No, I don't even see the other computers in "My network places ". I only see my workgroup, but empty.

Some yes and some no. A few of them only by IP.

    Hm.. what you mean?

Well, you seem to be looking in My Network Places. Have you looked through the "Entire Network" section?

As for services required, your IT guy at work would know. TCP/IP you have already, otherwise ping wouldn't work. Others which you might need are NetBEUI, Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Printer Sharing. If you don't have an IT guy, your best bet in finding out what is needed would be to see what is installed on one of the PC's you can't ping.

You won't need NetBEUI unless other systems on your network rely on it. As a rule of thumb, if TCP/IP is working, you don't need NetBEUI.

Can you connect to other PCs via \\computer_name? For example, if you have another computer called PC1, you'd open Windows Explorer and in the address textbox enter:

    \\PC1

    re Services:

If not logging onto a domain then you will need these services set to Automatic (Administrative Tools > Services):
    1. Computer Browser
    2. DHCP Client
    3. Server

You do not need (are not required if not on a domain, can be set to Manual or Disabled):
    1. DNS Client
    2. Distributed Link Tracking Client
    3. Distributed Transaction Coordinator
    4. Net Logon
    5. Network DDE
    6. Network DDE DSDM
    7. Network Provisioning
    8. SSDP Discovery Service
    9. TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
    10. Telnet
    11. Terminal Services

No, and that's the main problem. We have a server called "server ", which I can ping: "ping server ", and the responses are correct. But if I try to access with \\server I see an empty folder, I can't see the shared resources.

    Yes, "Entire Network/Microsoft Windows Network/Workgroup ".

We are not using a domain, just a workgroup.

    9. TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper

This is necessary in a workgroup unless you are doing pure CIFS instead of Windows Networking.

    I am sorry.

Your question was what services were required.

So what is your question now?

You refer to \\PC1 and \\Server

What are these? Are these Netbios names?

You have yet to provide an error message. If you net view the problem computer, what happens?

If you attempt a direct use of a share from Start, Run, what happens?

If you do a Start, Run, CMD

    netsh diag gui
And enable all options, what does not PASS the testing?

Could you provide an IPCONFIG /all from the problem computer?

    Just my two cents here.
If these other computers do not have File and Printer Sharing installed, you will not see them in My Network Places or Network Neighborhood. These other machines do not need it installed to see your 'server'.
What do these other machines have installed as an operating system?

The machine named \\server is a Linux server (Ubuntu) and it's used for file sharing.
But the only thing I see when I try to enter to \\server is an empty folder, like no resources were shared.

I have filesharing installed and the firewall is not enabled.

Here is my IPCONFIG/ALL, but it's in spanish:

According to the link you give me that seems to be the problem.
I changed that property, but when I do a ipconfig/all keeps saying "Disabled ".

I also tried with "ipconfig/release" and then "ipconfig/renew ", but the property is not updated.

Ok, I asking a guy in the work and we have some differences in our ipconfig/all

    Code:
    Configuración IP de Windows

            Nombre del host . . . . . . . . . : Ariel
            Sufijo DNS principal . . . . . . :
            Tipo de nodo. . . . . . . . . . . : híbrido
            Enrutamiento habilitado. . . . . .: No
            Proxy WINS habilitado. . . . . : No
Lista de búsqueda de sufijo DNS: cruxgames.loc

    Adaptador Ethernet INTERNET :

Sufijo de conexión específica DNS : cruxgames.loc
            Descripción. . . . . . . . . . . : Adaptador Ethernet Fast PCI de SiS 900 #3
            Dirección física. . . . . . . . . : 00-06-4F-16-E7-BA
            DHCP habilitado. . . . . . . . . : No
            Autoconfiguración habilitada. . . : Sí
            Dirección IP. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102

            Servidores DNS . . . . . . . . . .: 192.168.1.250
            Servidor WINS principal . . . . . : 190.160.1.1
            Concesión obtenida . . . . . . . : Miércoles, 20 de Septiembre de 2006

            Concesión expira . . . . . . . . .: Miércoles, 20 de Septiembre de 2006

The first difference is node type:
    Tipo de nodo. . . . . . . . . . . : híbrido
    I have "desconocido" (unknown).

He doesn't have the Netbios line, instead of it:
    Servidor WINS principal . . . . . : 190.160.1.1

I have added the WINS server, but still no work.

Just to be sure, is the Server service running?
    Workstation service running?
    Netbios Helper service running?

I was reading in the Microsoft KB, and says that the problem of Node type as unkown is because a key in the registry called "EnableProxy" set to 2. They say to change it to 1 or 0. I did it, but after rebooting the key becomes 2 again.
I tried deleting that key, but it shows again after a reboot.
