    Hi,

As you may have noticed, I have a problem with my computer (otherwise I wouldn't be bugging you guys :) ). Some guy had sent me .exe file, which I didn't know what it contains (pretty stupid tbh). I first scaned the file with avast and since it didn't show any threats, I had also run it. Abut an hour after that, avast started screaming like hell and poped up about 20 times, showing me there is a suspicious message or to be more exact, that there are too many identical e-mails in appointed time. Ok, nothing new, happened before. So instead of panicking, I had run Adaware nad after that also avast. Adaware found nothin that could cause this problem, nor did avast. So I scaned the system with f-prot, which pointed out only one problem: w32/Methodbod.gen on five exactly the same setup.exe files, in directories where they shouldn't be. Then I wen't to safe mode and did the same, except that I ordered f-prot to delete the infected files. I had also run kaspersky online scaner and ewido. Nothing changed when I came back to normal mode. It is extremely annoying to have 20 pop-ups on the screen at the same time and that I can't use my e-mail client. So I would like some assistance with clearing up this mess.

    Tnx

    Martin

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.
We live for this stuff.....bug away. :p

Ok, it looks like the culprit is in the 04 section of your log file, the file name indicates it as valid, but its filepath indicates a rogue.

    This:
C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe<<<--this file should be in System32 folder, not in system.

Lets get a second opinion and fix what we have here.

Oh and of course once you're all cleaned up, you need to update\patch your OS, the reason you likely got infected was due to the OS not having in place all the proper security patches from MS.

Please go Trend Micro to run the Trend Microâ„¢ HouseCall Scan.
    • Click Scan now. It's free!
    • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
    • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
    • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
    • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
    • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
    • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
    • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
    • Click the Clean now>> button.
    • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe<<<--this file***NOTE: Pay close attention to file path

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

I'm back, althougha bit late, but I was performing a scan with ewido in safe mode and it took it quite a while. It found exactly the same trojans, but now I have another problem. I can't get connected to world wide web from my computer anymore. I still can connect to router, but can't connect to google anymore. I have an ewido log, though I've quarantined all of the files. And I've done exactly the same as you've told me and I post here also the HJT log. Hope you can help me, because now my PC is really messed up :(

Log from ewido in safe mode before the quarantine:

Ok, is it possible that you missed the note on the 017 entries from above?
If this is what you did, and I'm guessing it is, follow instructions Restoring mistakenly removed items with HJT

Then see if you can connect.

Lets clean out all your temp files and folders and dig a bit deeper to see what is preventing that file from being deleted.

    Download Atribunes ATF Cleaner
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Tick the following boxes:
      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All User Temp
      • Cookies
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • History
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
We'll empty the Recycle Bin later, once we know you're all cleaned up and nothing needs to be restored.

Please generate a startup list using HJT. And please check the 2 boxes next to the 'Generate Startuplist' button:
    List also minor sections (full)
    List empty sections (complete)

After the new problem, I've used the backup function in HJT and after the reboot it worked fine. And there were aslo no more signs of automatic spaming after the ewido scan in safe mode. I'm posting aslo my startup list in this post. Since I can no longer detect any visible traces of any kind of virus or trojan horse, I'd like you to take a look of my HJT log and tell me, whether I still have some malicius software on my computer,

    Tnx

Well I'm afraid that file is still present.

Lets try a special deleting power tool.

    1) Please download the Killbox.
Save it to the desktop and run it.

    2) Select "Delete on Reboot ", and then select "All files ".

    3) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
    C:\WINDOWS\system\smss.exe /w

    4) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard ".

    5) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

Reboot, the system and please run HJT and post a fresh log for me.
