I have win98se on a compaq presario computer. I have a PNY 256M flash drive with a file on it. I tried it in both front and back USB ports. It doesn't recognize the removable disk. I tried it on two other computers, and it works. What can I do to make this work on my Compaq? I feel that it has to do with the driver, but I don't know anything about driver stuff. Can someone please help me?

eemom--Yes, with Win98, you probably need drivers. Did you get a CD with the USB Drive? If not go to the manufacturer's site and see if you can get drivers there. You may find drivers but with the notice that no guarantee is given that they will work for Win98. Download them anyway.
Or tell us what the drive is and maybe we can find the drivers.

    USB Port not working

Jim, I just tried another flash drive too in the USB and it doesn't work either. So, explain to me what you meant by the quote above. I am a bit confused. Thanks a bunch.

You have downloaded a .zip file - yes? You need Winzip, Winrar or similar to unzip it. Trial versions at the URLs. Once unzipped there is a setup.exe - double click to instal driver.

eemom--Forgive me. I did not see that you had named your USB flash drive in your first post.
You seem to be on the way to a solution now with mattman's and PeteC's advice.

Start the computer without the drive connected. Right-click on the .inf file and select Install. Connect the drive, the Add New Hardware wizard should run and ask where to locate the driver files. Direct it to where you have unzipped/decompressed the files. You will have located it when you see the musb6E.inf file in the left hand panel.

Using Win 98, I suggest you do not disconnect the drive while the system is running. Shutdown to disconnect.

    Matt

Not knowing exactly which PNY drive you had I downloaded one of the Win 98 driver zips - that one had a setup.exe :)
