My e-machines 1.1 ghz with 98SE OS does not want to shut off. Every time I have to remove the plug from the wall to shut it off. I do not think that it is a good idea, but that is only solution, that I know of.

    Please help.

    Best regards,
    Gulab

    Dear David,

I am very sorry that I did not thank you earlier for your response.

At present with limited time, I am able to get back today. I am in the process of
trying the methods outlined in the knowledge base articles and see if that will help.

    Best regards,
    Gulab

No problem, I rarely visit this forum during the weekends anyway. Good luck with the troubleshooting.

Oh, and as for worrying about damaging your PC or files because you are having to pull the plug from the wall; I would worry too much as this problem usually comes up after the file system section of a shutdown has been completed.

    My problem just became worse.
I booted the computer in safe mode to defrag the drive. It found no errors. My display changed to 16 colors 640 x 480 resolution.
After I restarted the computer normally, the resolution stayed the same(640 x 480). Previously I could change the resolution and no. of colors without restarting the computer, but now when I changed the resolution to 800 x 600 with 256 colors, I got a message asking to restart the computer for changes to take place. When I click O.K., while shutting off the screen hangs up and I have
to unplug it. When I again start it, it comes back with 640 x 480 display setting.

At present I am completely lost and have no more ideas.

Can any one suggest any ideas besides throwing the computer in trash or
reformatting the drive and reinstalling everything.

    Best regards,
    Gulabg

Boot to a DOS prompt by tapping on the ctrl key (try f8 if ctrl doesn't work for you) continuously while the computer is booting. It should stop at a menu. When it does, select DOS prompt only. Then, at the prompt, type scanreg /restore. You'll be presented a menu with several dates listed in it. Using the arrow keys, select one that pre-dates when you set the resolution lower and press enter. This should restore the registry that was in use at that time and should get you back to the resolution you were using at the time.

A friend of mine came by and he atleast solved the problem of low resolution
    on monitor.

He instructed the monitor in update the drivers or something like that and
changed the resolution to 800 x 600 . That worked. I still have to solve the
problem of computer not shutting off. I will work over the week end on it and
    see if I can succeed.

Many thanks to every one. Once the display problem was solved, it also solved
    the shut off problem.

The computer is working fine at present and I hope that it stays that way.
I will make no changes to mess it up.

    Thanks again,
    Gulabg
