I have two SATA HDs (C: and D: not set up in a RAID array)on a Silicon Image SATA controller.

I have two CD Writer/DVD ROMs connected to the Primary IDE Channel.

I have two ATA HDs (removables inserted in a Vantec EZ-Swap aluminum enclosures)

If you have the two drives connected at the same time, my first thought would be that they are jumpered the same way (master?).

I would be reasonably certain it was due to the configuration of the drives on the IDE channels.

You could arrange the HDDs on the primary IDE channel as long as you were able to remove HDD 0 from the boot options.

Try disconnecting the optical drives until you get the HDDs "operational ".
