I have a feeling I know what the problem is, but i'm not sure.

I've been having this problem ever since I bought an external drive. I bought the enclosure and the hard drive from Comp USA. Its a 200 gig Maxtor drive, in a comp usa brand enclosure.

It seems to me that randomly my computer will shut down only when the external is on. AFter searching on this board, I found Everest, and checked up on my cpu/mother board temp. All seemed fine(29 C/84 F for motherboard 49 C/120 F for my CPU).

Anybody have an idea on what could be the problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd consider myself an intermediate in my skills with a computer(i can trouble shoot usually..I've built a few computers before).

I believe thats what you're talking about. The case I have the external in is powered.

It is getting quite annoying because sometimes it runs completely fine for days without a problem, then there will suddenly be problems.

When it does this, by any chance is the power light still lit on the front panel of the computer?

nope. It is completely shut off, as if I would go through the normal shutdown routine.
