My father in law's computer has an issue with my flash drives.

It's a gigabyte mobo with an AMD sempron 3000 with 512mb RAM & XP pro SP2. (the SP2 was only added a couple of months ago). It does not have internet access (the phone lines out his way barely handle voice, and dialup dropouts are so common, that you spend more time re-connecting than being logged on. Wireless is even less of an option.)

Whenever I plug in a flashdrive and try to open or explore the device to see what files are on it, I get a windows explorer needs to close error.

My computer was bought as an OEM model, XPproSP2 pre-installed, and it has never had the problem. Indeed, it has worked near flawlessly.

The front ports are usb 1.0 ( I also get the high-speed device plugged into non-high speed port message). Could this be part of the problem?

I would like to know if there are any patches or other fixes for this issue as it's really beginning to tick him off, and he looks to me for answers.

Belarc Advisor will also list all post-SP2 hotfixes and will indicate if any of them are missing.

That might help you narrow down exactly which hotfix(es) might apply to USB.

On or shortly after the 2nd Tuesday of each month (Microsoft's "Patch Tuesday "), you'll probably need to download Belarc Advisor's Security Definitions Update if you want to keep Belarc Advisor up to date.

    Thanks, Will do that.

It doesn't have any post SP2 patches/updates as far as i know. His buddy who installed XP on the box, only installed an SP1 copy. I hunted down the SP2 download and installed it for him.

I shall download all relevant/useful patches onto my removable HD and do an update on his machine next time I see him.
