I want to do a clean install of Windows XP. I currently have W2K and would like to wipe that out and install Win XP. I tried to boot from the CD-Rom but for some reason it won't boot from the CD. I set the BIOS to boot from CD but it wouldn't boot. I'm installing Windows XP Pro. Is there a way to format the drive where my W2K is and install XP onto it? I tried to install XP by running the installation from W2K (with installation option) but it didn't format the drive. It just installed on top of W2K. Now, when I reboot, it asks me if I want to go into W2K or XP. How can do a clean install??

    thanks...

Is your install media the original - or a burned copy?

Also if you have more than 1 tray device (CD, DVD, CDRW ect.) have you tried booting from all of them?

First - the option you are being presented is because of an entry in a hidden file named boot.ini. If you edit the file (notepad will do it) and remove the line(s) for 2K, you will no longer see the option - which probably doesn't work now anyway.

Next - you can use the instructions in HOW TO: Start Setup from MS-DOS in Windows XP (Q307848) which will allow you to run setup from the CD - faster than starting with an XP floppy setup set of 6 disks. You will be presented with a choice to format and perform a clean install.

Or if you want to really make sure, you can download a set of 6 floppy disks that will run setup for you if your computer refuses the CD ROM boot and you don't want to mess with the DOS boot/FAT32 from the Q307848 article above by going to Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks (Q310994) and following the instructions.

edit note: oops. Sorry Prof but I had this response open and researching links for it before I noticed your post.
