I have a similar problem. Upon every reboot, the registry editor, task manager, and command prompt are all unavailable and give the message "... disabled by your administrator." I can reenable them by use of REG commands I found online but the problem reasserts itself every reboot.

Other symptoms: On startup, a "My Computer" window is opened and it takes unusually long to load the contents. Next, Norton Systemworks gives a message that there is a problem and I should uninstall/reinstall NSW. Then NSW gives another error that "the parameter is incorrect. "

Applications are slow to run, when task manager is reenabled and run, the total percentages in the CPU column do not add to 100%, and the number of processes listed on the performance tab is 3 more than the number of processes actually shown in the process tab.

I have run SpyBot, Ad-Aware, run a housecall via Trend Micro, and the problem persists. Here is a copy of my HJT logfile:

I have already tried removing the F2 and F3 entries from the top, but they reappear on reboot.

I'd really like to avoid a complete format and reinstall of windows. Can anyone out there help?

I've moved this topic to 'Removing Spyware & Viruses' forum.

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums bdleitner.

As stated by Bill, this is a malaware problem. Along with the symptoms you have the presence of the lines you have tried to remove is also a dead give away.

Lets first off get an online scan so we can possibly find and remove this worm.

Please go Trend Micro to run the Trend Microâ„¢ HouseCall Scan.
    • Click Scan now. It's free!
    • Read and put a Check next to Yes I accept the terms of use.
    • Click the Launching HouseCall>> button.
    • If confirmed that HouseCall can run on your system, under Using Java-based HouseCall kernel click the Starting HouseCall>> button.
    • You may receive a Security Warning about the TrendMicro Java applet, click YES.
    • Under Scan complete computer for malware, grayware, and vulnerabilities click the Next>> button.
    • Please be patient while it installs, updates, and scans your system.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will take you to the summary page.
    • Under Cleanup options, choose clean all detected infections automatically.
    • Click the Clean now>> button.
    • If anything was found you may be prompted to run the scan again, you can just close the browser window.

Once that has been completed, we'll repair the task manager and so forth.

    Also:
Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It also needs to be removed from the desktop.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe)Move HijackThis.exe into this folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Thank you for your assistance TeMerc.

I already ran the Trend Micro™ HouseCall Scan. It scanned for 3 hours and found some problems. When I told it to fix them it spend another 30 or so minutes working and then said some problems could not be fixed, and they'd be highlighted in red. I went back to the results page but there was nothing highlighted (or anything at all really) in red. When I rebooted, the symptoms returned.

Since my first post I have also downloaded and run Trojan Remover, but it did not solve the problem either.

I have moved HijackThis off my desktop and into its own folder as instructed, but having already done a Trend Micro Housecall scan, I don't know where to go from here. This seems a really nasty bug.

Sorry about that, I shuold have read more closely.

Lets try another online scan and fix what is showing with HJT. If the next scan shows us any more(which it will not fix), we can work from there.

Please go here to run Panda's ActiveScan
    • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
    • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
    • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Return back to HJT after the Panda scan.

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe

    F3 - REG:win.ini: load=C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe

    F3 - REG:win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\scvhost.exe<<<--this file

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

Also to fix the task manager and regedit:
    Kelly's Korner, Line 173:Repair regedit
Same page for task manager, but line 113, select 'repair'.

Well, I was going to give up, and had even posted a message to that effect, because the panda scan window completely froze and would not move, resize, or refresh for 15 minutes, and it looked like it just wasn't going to work.

But then right after I wrote that, I went back to the other room (I've been posting using my laptop) and the window had refreshed and it seemed to be working. I'll let it scan and post more info tomorrow morning. I'm still thinking I might need to nuke the disk and reinstall the OS. I have already backed up all my data to a 2nd physical drive in preparation for that step, but I'll give panda a chance to fix the problem.

The Panda scan ran successfully and output the following results:

    Incident Status Location

    Adware:adware/bookedspace Not disinfected c:\windows\bsx32.ini
    Spyware:Cookie/YieldManager Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Benjamin Leitner\Cookies\benjamin leitner@ad.yieldmanager[2].txt

    Spyware:Spyware/7r7t Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\tpuninstall.exe
    Virus:Bck/Ciadoor.X Disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsock32.sys
Well, that format is pretty icky, but found a Bck/Ciadoor.X virus and cleaned it.

Upon rebooting into safe mode I was able to find and delete the scvhost.exe file, and then rebooted into normal mode.

All symptoms appear to be gone, and the extra entries did not reappear in HJT. Here is my HJT logfile after reboot:

Ok, I'm assuming you did either lowlevel reformat or just reinstall OS?? Because a full reformat should not have left anything on your drive what so ever. No programs, files, software updates or any of that.

    The log file looks fine.

At this point all you need to do is perhaps install some more protection, but you already have Spybot. I would perhaps enable TeaTimer as a monitor if your system handles it Ok.

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.1.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

    Happy surfing!!
    Tom :D
