    Just did an upgrade install of Win2k on a Win98SE system. I've had this computer for ages and did not want to do a clean install. The upgrade went fine except for one problem. In my add/remove program section all of my previously installed programs are missing. They were not deleted, just missing from add/remove. How do I restore these programs back into the add/remove program section? Thanks.

    :confused:

    The scroll bar is there and nothing is listed from top to bottom. My gut tells me that upgrade installs are not the answer. I thought I would give it a shot before doing a clean install. I'm not a big fan of upgrades anyway. Years ago the only good upgrade was from Win95 to Win98SE. This worked like a charm. Big difference from Win98 to Win2k. It might be best if I started from scratch and do a clean install. There are only four drivers I need for the upgrade which I saved on a CD.
    Thanks for your help. It is appreciated.

    I had a similar problem and a W2K techie, obviously more competent than I, sent me these solutions to try. It worked for me. Although I did not have to perform the in-place upgrade, I did have to repair Internet Explorer (described in 266668). Good luck!

    From the "Run" box try;
    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\appwiz.cpl

    regsvr32 %windir%\system32\webvw.dll
    to rebuild several *.htt files

    If unsuccessful try
    sfc /purgecache
    sfc /scannow

    Or try the regedits described in;

    Great info! Looks like I have a project on my hands. Give me a few days and I'll get back to you. Thanks to you both.

    What a project! The information you sent was invaluable. I will keep for future reference. The end result is good news, bad news. The good news is your recommendations worked. The bad news is the OS ran very sluggish. Downloaded every available update, disabled all services not required, ran all virus and cleanup programs, ran check disk, page defrag, and disk defrag. When done the results were horrible. The OS appeared to be running in quicksand. At this point in time the old programs I wanted to save were meaningless.
    My frustration got the best of me and I decided to do a clean install. When done the OS flew. The results were great. I have heard about many successful upgrades to Win2k. I am not one of those success stories. My attempts for future upgrades has ended. From now on it is either a clean install or nothing.
    In closing I want to thank all of you for your support. You have been terrific. You will never hear from me again about an upgrade question. We can now put this thread to bed. Thanks again.

    :)
