D and E drives disappeared. Have tried restore, tried the fix from doug knox website, nothing working. I believe my last choice is to go in to the registry but I am a beginner and I feel like I need to make out my will before attempting. Can't chance screwing something up. Must have computer for work. help please!

What drive do you boot from if not drive C?

I need to know exactly what you did so far:

. "I tried a restore" Do you mean System Restore? In in-place Upgrade Restore? Restore from a backup?

. Doug Knox fix. Which one?

    --------------
    1. Start, Run, diskmgmt.msc

. Do the drives show here?
. Use the Action, Rescan disks.

    Test.

    2. If no joy, Start, Run, devmgmt.msc

Do you see the drives here?
If not, expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller section
. right click the Primary IDE controller, uninstall
. right click the Secondary IDE controller uninstall

    Reboot.

Test. Do the drive appear now?

    .

Yes, system restore to a earlier date before the drives disappeared.

Doug Knox fix XP_CD-DVD-Fix that I found that was supposed to get the drives back.

    Tried #1
The only drive here is ST340014A (don't know if that will tell you anything)
Did Action- rescan disk and a window pops up but goes away so fast I can't read what it says.
Checked and still only showing C drive

    #2
    Again, no drives here.
I see the primary IDE controller but the only other controller shows as
Intel(R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller 24CB. Is this my secondary controller? before I go clicking away!

What type of drive is drive D? E?

My guess is that both drives are attached to this:
    Intel(R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller 24CB

And that the secondary IDE channel is not in use.

Could you expand the tree for SCSI and Raid Controllers and post the results back here?

D&E are my CD and DVD drives.

When I look under the Intel Controller all it shows is my C drive
    and driver file details show:
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\PartMgr.sys

I don't see anything that says either SCSI or Raid Controllers.
    Device Manager shows:

    Computer
    Disk drives
    Display Adaptors
    Floppy Disk Controllers
    Floppy Disk drives
    IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
    Keyboards
    Mice etc.
    Modems
    Monitors
    Network Adaptors
    Ports
    Processors
    Sound, video & game controllers
System Devices (there is a lot of stuff under here)
    Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Am I in the right place?
Sorry, I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just new at this.

    You are doing fine.

Lets run an Evererest report to see what is going on. Download Everest Home edition: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Unpack and run the utility. See if you can identify which controller the two missing drives are connected.

See if there is anything remarkable said about the two missing drives.

I ran a report on hardware devices and I don't see anything that stands out. Then I did a systems report and nothing there. Of course I don't really know what I'm looking for. I don't see a way to do an attachment here or I would send it to you since you know what you're looking for.
