I have an AMD Duron 1.3 GHZ processor on a gigabyte GA-7vrxp ver 1.1 MB. My CPU temp is ok right now but it goes up to 141 F and I get bunches of BSOD's. Is this too hot for a CPU?

An overheat on the CPU generally shuts the computer down without a BSOD - simply Off :) A temp of 141 F is fairly high as is the idle temp you post. Suggest you clean out the CPU fan and heatsink - do not remove the heatsink from the CPU.

Look in Event Viewer (Right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer) for messages timed to coincide with a BSOD and post them here (double click on an event to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste here.

Alternatively post the Dump Data - see ....

    Thanks Pete

Wouldn't you know this Pig is working good right now. I have a new CPU ordered and it will arrive Tuesday.

I have been having this problem for two weeks. I had never in 4 years had a BSOD and suddenly more than I can shake a stick at. They are random from c000021a Fatal System Errors thru page faults in unpaged area thru IRQL Less than....thru Driver_IRQL less than.

I have cleaned the fan and heatsink and applied new heat compound. My case has not been closed for 2 weeks.

I had my sister check her cpu temp and it was 120 F.

Also tried to format and reinstall windows. Could not get all the way through install. Got down to 2 minutes remaining once. It just blue screens and starts the install over. I restored my backup image to get to even an operating system.

I will get back when the new Proc is installed.

Have you noticed the big increase of BSOD posts lately?

    Hi Bill,

Two of my motherboards are GA-7's (GA-7VTXE+ and GA-7VKML). One has stopped working and the IDE Controller is faulty on the other. Both have leaky capacitors. I suggest you inspect the capacitors on the motherboard for any sign of leakage or swelling.

Have you checked the CPU usage figures in Task Manager? Anything causing a high usage?

Athlon XP 1.8 micron die chips are a very high temperature model, maybe the new CPU (should be a 1.3 micron) will run cooler. I still wonder about the possibility of bad capacitors though.

    Matt

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (8e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.

Thought I would post my solution.

I replaced my CPU. I haven't had a Bsod in two days. I was getting random Blue screens about 10 per day. Also had other symptoms like Firefox opening two pages at once and unable to get through a windows repair or install.

My new CPU is running from 120 to 129 F.

Bill, how are you cooling your new cpu? Did the cooler come attached to the new cpu (retail cooler) or did you put thermal paste on it and then attach the cooler?

For $10-15 you should be able to find a cooler that can do a better job than even 120F. Also, sounds like your case set-up might not be that conducive to cooling but that's a big can of worms to open.

    Gary

Gary, The CPU came with a heat sink and fan attached.

The heat sync had a little patch of thin tape like substance under a protective plastic tape. It was all from AMD in one package. I installed it just as the instructions stated. I was wondering if I should have added some compound but it was not mentioned in the paperwork.

That sounds typical. A retail cpu comes with a cooler and a small patch of TIM (thermal interface material) that contacts the cpu core. In that case, you don't use Arctic Silver or the like. It's an either/or situation.
