Well, I've never seen this before. I have a friend's computer here and I cannot get it to boot. It is an eMachines W1800, although the case is about the only thing still eMachines about it!

We just put in a new power supply, new Intel motherboard and new processor (Celeron D 340). The Celeron is listed as supported by the motherboard at the Intel website.

When starting the computer, it goes to the screen that says "We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully... ". At that point it does not matter which option you select (Safe Mode, Last Known, Normal etc), it will just try to load but restart and go right back to the same "We apologize..." screen.

I have checked all connections, reset CMOS, tried moving RAM (which is recognized properly). BIOS recognizes the RAM and drives properly. I took the hard drive out and ran it in another computer and scanned it with Norton and Trend Micro and found nothing.

I do not have a Windows XP disc. Anyone with any suggestions? I am so stumped as to what to try next. (sigh)

I should add that the only things connected are the monitor, keyboard (ps/2) and mouse (ps/2).

OK, thanks Pete. No suprise really - i wish my friend would have spoken with me before he bought the new componants - I would have looked into it and maybe found out ahead of time that this would be an issue!

Can I use any XP disc?

You need to use the same type XP disk. Pro > Pro, Home > Home, OEM > OEM, and Retail > Retail.

For a repair install - maybe although I have a feeling that the repair asks for a CD key in which case it will need to be the key for the original install.

You have nothing to lose by trying another XP CD :)

Edit: Wiskeyman posted while I was composing.

OK, thanks guys. The product key is on a sticker on the back of the case. He is going to have to find that original CD (I told him way back when that he needed to put it in safe place but do you think he did? No!).
