I have a Wireless Laptop(XP Home) & Wired Desktop(XP Media Center). I can't ping my Desktop from my Laptop or ping my Laptop from my Desktop. I can get the Laptop to ping itself by using either the IP or Computer Name however I cannot get the Desktop to ping itself using IP or Computer Name. I can't get either computer to recognize the other computer.

I have a Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router. Model is BEFW11S4. I am using the Wireless USB Adapter Model WUSB11 on the Laptop & one of the 4 ports on the back of the router for the desktop. The IP for the Wireless Laptop is 192.168.1.5 & the Wired Desktop is 192.168.1.6. I also have the latest Firmware on the router & Adapter if that matters.

I have the normal Windows Firewall running, but do have the File & Printer Sharing checked in the Exceptions tab on both computers. I also have ZoneAlarm on both computers. I have disabled it completely on both computers as well as the Windows Firewall to see if this would work & still it doesn't.

I am just giving as much information on the specifics of both computers as possible so that you wont have to ask for it. Also I have checked...both computers are on the same domain.

Here is link to a thread on another forum were I couldn't get much help. I hope I can get this resolved here.

Both computers are on the same domain.

I reset the router. I unplugged it...wait about a minute & plug it back up.

On my desktop I can't ping myself, but I can on the laptop. I can now ping my router from my desktop which I couldn't do before. I don't know if this helps, but on the desktop if I ping my laptop computer's Name, GATEWAY-LAPTOP, then it times out, but it shows the Laptop's IP w/out me typing it in. Same way on my laptop...I can ping my desktop's name & it times out, but shows the desktop's IP.

On my desktop...I click on My Network Places. I click on View workgroup computers. I can see my desktop & laptop listed. If I try to open the laptop I get an error saying:
Gateway-Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

On my laptop...I click on My Network Places. I click on View workgroup computers. I get an error saying:
Antek is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.

According to the message you gave above.

Have you done "set up a home or small office network" wizard?

Or, firewall->advanced->ICMP then check "allow incoming echo request" ?

Could you share the ipconfig/all information for both laptop and desktop?

I am now able to ping the desktop from the laptop & the laptop can ping itself. The desktop cannot ping itself & cannot ping the laptop.

    This is for the Desktop

    This is the Laptop

    Several things:

    1. Your choice of computer names is flawed. For Windows networking you want simple names, all Capitals, 12 or fewer characters in length, and without punctuation.

While the rules follow DNS naming standards, Windows Networking itself does not.

    So, rename GATEWAY-LAPTOP GWAYLAPTOP

    2. Ping failures show cable plant, physical plant (routers, NICs) failures, or firewalls.

Your example of repowering the router is a physical plant issue. (By the way, check for new firmware on that router).

Your IPCONFIG results for the Desktop are good. So check for firewall issues. Ping requests are in the catagory of ICMP traffic. XP SP2's native firewall, for example, by default will block ping traffic. You have to enable under the ICMP tab "allow incoming echo requests." for ping to work. Many other firewall products will block ping traffic by default as well.

Watch out for "hidden" firewalls. Antivirus software, for example, can contain a hidden firewall component. PC-Illan is one AV software notorious for this. VPN Client software may contain a hidden firewall. CISCO VPN Client software is notorious for this.

    Final issue:
    This is a permissions issue.

The problem is with user rights assignments on the desktop computer.

The Guest account settings in Control Panel | User Accounts have
nothing to do with networked access. They determine whether someone
can log on as Guest at the keyboard.

If the desktop computer runs Windows XP Professional:

    1. Click Start | Run, type "secpol.msc" in the box, and click OK.
    2. Click Local Policies.
    3. Click User Rights Assignment.
    4. Click "Access this computer from the network" and make sure that
    the Everyone group is included.
    5. Click "Deny access to this computer from the network" and make sure
that the Everyone group is NOT included.

If the desktop computer runs Windows XP Home Edition, the "secpol.msc"
program isn't available. To make the required user rights
    assignments:

    1. Download and install the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools
    from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544 .

    2. Click Start | All Programs | Windows Resource Kit Tools | Command
    Shell.

    3. Type these lines in a command prompt window, exactly as shown,
observing upper case vs. lower case:

    net user guest /active:yes
    ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
    ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

Last step for all versions of XP: A registry change:

    Start, Run, regedit
    Navigate to this Value:
    HK_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/Control/LSA
    RestrictAnonymous

If this key is set to 1, change it to 0 (that is a zero)
If the key does not exist, leave it alone.

The desktop runs XP Media Center & MS doesn't list Media Center as a supported OS. I changed the names on both computers to just letters...nothing else. I reset both computers & it doesn't work.

I did step 3 of what you said to do.

The last thing about the Registry. I g to HK_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ & do not have a Control folder. In the HK_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ I have a ControlSet, ControlSet001, ControlSet003, CurrentControlSet, LastKnownGoodRecovery, Mounted Devices, Select, Startup & WPA folders.

Sorry. You are absolutely right that I missed a Key:

To make it up to you I will make the registry edit for you. Highlight the line below with your mouse, right-click Copy, and then Start, Run, and right click Paste to make the edit:

    reg add "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA" /v restrictanonymous /t reg_dword /d 0

I have done everything you have suggested above to both computers. At this point I can see the other computer from each computer as well as itself.

The only thing is that I can't access my desktop from latptop & can't access laptop from desktop. I am getting the permission denied.

I get this on the desktop
GatewayLaptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

I get this on the laptop
Jasonm7560n is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

If I use this in on the desktop it ask for a user name & password for 192.168.1.6 & visa-versa for laptop. I am entering the Windows Logon credentials...is that correct because it isn't working?

We have cured your permissions issue.

Now, "Network path not found "

You need to allow SMB traffic over your firewall.

If you are using the Windowx MCE Service Pack 2 firewall:

Start, Run, netsh firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable

    Do this on both machines.

Then open the firewall and under the Exception tab make an exception for File and Printer sharing.

That should take care of the problem. Test after a reboot of both machines.
If no joy, do one last thing:

    Start, Run, netsh winsock reset

Wait for a message to restart your computer. Restart your computer.

The laptop is XP Home. I tried the Start, Run, netsh firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable, but it wouldn't take that...it said command wasn't recognized so I did the Start, Run, netsh winsock reset on the XP Home laptop.

I rested both computers & still get that same error about permission denied & network path not found.

I have in the Windows firewall to allow file & print sharing checked.

On the XP MCE machine, make sure that under Control Panel, Folder Options, View, that 'Use simple file sharing - recommended' is checked.

This is the first mention of XP Home you have made. You said both were Windows MCE editiion. This makes a big difference to the one trying to help you.

I hope someone else will pick up this thread.

    My best wishes to you.

My apologies, yes you did specify both OS versions.
