I try to make backups of all my digital pictures but just noticed I cannot open any of the files I've backed up on cd-r's. I can open these same pictures to view them that are already on the computer but if I burn a backup and try to playback or open them I get this:

    Runtime Error!
    Program:C\Program files\Ahead\Nero PhotoSnap\PhotoSnapViewer.exe
    Abnormal program termination

Any idea what I need to do to fix this?

    Hi mccoady,
What version is Nero? Have you gone to support site to see if there is an update? After doing a quick search on google for runtime error in photosnap, I noticed many older non-updated versions have bugs that were known for causing this type of error. Update or patches were needed to fix the problems.

I'm using Nero 6 Ultra Edition version 6.6.0.1.6 and no I haven't went to Nero's support. I deleted some things in "Documents" (that had collected over a period of time) that I didn't think were necessary so I thought maybe that was the problem but I didn't know how to fix it. It may be just a coincidence with what I deleted because I really don't know when the errors first started it might have been a while ago.

I'm not sure how I ever ended up with using PhotoSnap to handle or display my picture files it seems like there was another program doing this when I first got my computer. Is there a Windows program on my computer that might have been handling these files before? Is there a way to use another program to display my current pictures files and not use PhotoSnap?

I know nothing of the software by Nero you are trying to use, but I note one difference that may or not be of importance.

The files on your CD-R will present themselves as Read Only. If whatever you are trying to use expects to open them read/write/modify, say as an editor might expect, then odd results will obtain.

ghement, above, recommended using a different viewer, and let me second his vote for IrfanView, freeware: http://www.irfanview.com/

One last related thought: When you copy your pictures from the CD-R do not be surprised if they keep their Read-only status. You will need to use Explorer to modify the read-only attribute, or at the command line you can do an entire folder at once:

    attrib.exe -r *.*

The Windows default viewer is Picture and Fax Viewer - when Nero was installed it took over as the default viewer as no doubt you allowed all image file extensions to be associated with it.

To revert back to the default viewer ....

Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types and scroll down to jpg and highlight it. The default program to open such files will be shown - to change it click on Change and select a program from the list.

Thanks guys! Pete I followed your directions and converted back to Windows default viewer and everything changed back except for two files. The two picture files stayed as Nero with the same error screen but I can live with loosing only those two.

Is there any advantage to using irfanview over Windows default?

For simply viewing the pictures probably not, but if you want to adjust them in any way Irfranview will do it and with much more flexibility than Paint.
