When I close down my browser (IE6), a 1" x 3" part of it remains in the top right-hand corner of my screen and remains there. It never goes away. Would anyone know what the cause of this might be? Better still, can anyone suggest how I might correct the problem? Actually, I have so many icons on my desktop that I've started not to notice this situation. Thank you.

    Hi Lugwalker,

I suggest updating your drivers at the Dell website. Especially chipset and graphics drivers.

I am getting "remnants" as well, changing out of a game...which I shouldn't do :) . I put it down to a change in the resolution, the game runs at a different resolution to my Windows resolution. Try changing the resolution in Control Panel -> Display. Are you running a "non-standard" resolution? If you have a "normal" monitor, you want a 4:3 resolution (example, 800 X 600 pixels = 4:3).

It seems to me the issue is more likely that Explorer does not refresh on an exit from IE. It also sounds like something is trying to create a pop-under, but the windows fill is being blocked. If you do not have a malware scanner, download and install either Microsoft Windows Defender or Ewido Anti-Spyware free trial. Update the definitiions and do a complete scan.

Then use this utility from fellow MS-MVP Ramesh Srinivasin called IEFix: http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm You can disable the option for a SFC /Scannow and simply apply the rest of the Fixes. Reboot and test.

Thank you, gentlemen. I have Ewido Security Suite and Windows Defender running at all times on my computer, so they protect me from malware.

I changed the screen resolution down to 4:3 but found the result unsatisfactory. I was unable, after a few attempts, to return to my original screen-filling resolution so decided to see what a system restore might do. Despite the fact that my problem had been there for the past week, when I restored to a point created only five hours ago the problem disappeared after the restoration. Now that 1" x 3" remnant of IE is no longer hanging around in my upper right-hand corner.

Thanks again, Bill and Matt, for stirring up my braincells :)

The old system restore button eh?

I want to see if Vista has "Don't worry, this will fix everything" button.
    :D

Well done and thanks for letting us know.

Did you try simply restarting? I would have thought that would have done it (of course system restore includes a restart).

Since I've had this problem for a week or so, JR, I've had occasion to restart my computer umpteen times, so restarting never corrected the problem.

Interesting situation occurred last night. The problem returned. Before I closed down for the night I wondered if some programme was working in the background which might be causing the problem. So I pressed 'Control-Alt-Delete' and noticed that a 'bounce' feature from a programme I installed over a week ago was still working away. I stopped its activity and, lo and behold, the empty rectangle in the top right-hand corner disappeared and the desktop returned to normal full screen immediately. The programme is the spam eliminator iHateSpam, so I went into its 'Options' and disabled the 'bounce' feature. Everything seems to be working perfectly today - fingers crossed! :)
