In the last three weeks I have had several unexpected reboots when either creating, saving or opening txt notepad files. Not every time but perhaps every 2nd or 3rd time in a single session.
My sytem is clean - i have several antiivrus software and none have found anything, I also cleaned and defragged the system but it has since occured again.
I cannot find any reference to this happening at MS or in a google search.
Does anyone have any ideas please?

First of all you need to stop it rebooting :-
Go to Start, Control Panel, System, Advanced Tab, Startup & Recovery at the bottom and click Settings, then untick "Automatically restartâ€. This will allow you to read the message before having to turn off and reboot.

Then look here for the Stop message that you are getting http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php

Shelleyrae - Welcome to the Board :)

Further to BurrWalnut's suggestion post the Stop Error Message on the Blue Screen here as I see you class yourself as a beginner.

Immediately after a reboot please go directly to Event Viewer - right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer. Look in both System and Application for entries timed when the computer restarted - they should be flagged with a white cross on a red ground. Double click on an event to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste in a post in this thread.

BTW - if you use Wordpad instead of Notepad do you have the same problem?

    Shelleyrae,

I'm hoping this is a typo... you should have only one antivirus program running on your system at a time. Running more than one a/v program may cause conflicts and is not recommended. If your statement included spyware apps, this may explain the 'several'. If you are running more than one a/v program, please select one, keep it updated and 'disable (or uninstall) the others.

Being generous the above statement is unclear about what 'running' is meant. On its face the above is flat out wrong.

I have several Antivirus programs installed as well. One is an active scanner of email and files, and for general protection against virus or worm issues. The other two are set to actively obtain updates but have no active role, and no scheduled role.

When I suspect an issue and have heard nothing from my active AV, I manually initiate scans with one or both of the other two AV programs.

I do not think there is anything unusual about this installation.

Bill - Welcome to the Board :)

Totally agree with you, but from experience of HJT logs it is clear that many folk do have more than one av program active and scanning, which can lead to conflicts.

    Bill,

Sorry this wasn't clearer. Running = Active. If you have more than one a/v program installed but only one is active, this should not be a problem and allow you the benefit of different on demand scanner options. Two active a/v programs may conflict and is not recommended.

    Thanks for the assistance

To clarify I only have McAfee as my primary antivirus active at all times - I should have been more specfic in that I also have several spyware programs that I sweep regulary with. I did class msyelf as a beginner but on a practical day to day basis Im pretty cluey, its with system errors that I have little experience, touch wood.

The problem has seemed to have resolved itself - I believe the error involved a corrupt font as I found information that this could cause problems (my Photoshop CS2 was also acting up) and had recently installed some new fonts. I removed these and have not had any repeat of the original error.

I appreciate you all taking the time to help:)

Glad to hear that the problem is resolved :) Thinking back I am sure that we have come across this problem before with a dodgy font!. Thanks for the update.
