    Hello

    Problem:
During SP2 update I experienced a brief power surge 75% of the way through the install process (install window said "cleaning up files "), then the computer shut down. On start up, the computer was extremely slow. The System showed that the SP2 update was installed.

When I tried to uninstall SP2 and start over again, I could not. I tried all four methods as outlined in the Microsoft tech note 875350. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350/en-us
Each time an error window appeared saying a file could not be found.

I had made a restore point prior to installing the SP2 update, but when I tried to select it only a list of Microsoft update numbers appeared in the restore selection window and none of the dates in the calendar could be selected.

Prior to installation, I ran Norton Anti-virus, Norton System works, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and Registry 1st Aid to make sure the computer was clean. The computer worked perfectly. Then I followed the steps outlined in the Microsoft tech note 875364.

Computer: Dell Dimension Windows XP SP1

    Question:
Is there another way to uninstall SP2 or do I have to reinstall Windows XP from scratch? I hope someone can help. Thanks.

    Problem solved

It seems I got lucky. As originally mentioned, a power surge caused my SP2 update to stop before it was completely installed. (I was installing the update over the Internet.)

After re-trying all known methods of uninstalling SP2 without success, I decided to re-install the SP2 update from a CD. (Since my next step would have been to re-install the entire Windows XP system from scratch, I had nothing to lose.)

It worked. The install process took a lot longer, but the SP2 installation was complete, and all the previous files were "cleaned up." The computer is actually working better with the SP2 update (everything is faster.)

Hopefully, this method will help someone with the same or similar SP2 problem. Thanks for the input.

Glad to hear that you managed to sort it out - thanks for the update.
