    Hi all,

I just build a new PC for a friend with a MSI k9vgm-v motherboard.

When I switch on the fans (case and cpu) all come on but nothing else happens.

I cant swap components with my pc as they are incomatible (intel v AMD, PCIe v AGP etc).

I heve reseated all and still get same result. All componets are compatible.

Only time I got this before was a dead mobo.

Any ideas what I should try?

Just to update - I have now tried a different hard drive, IDE this time (other is SATA) and still no post. The gfx card fan also comes on, but the keyboard light does not.

I am starting to worry that the mainboard is duff :(

The PSU is 430w TAGAN so should have all the power...

now tried a different power supply and tried with each of the RAM sticks removed one at a time - same result. Also removed gfx card and tried to boot with on board = same.

That only leaves the motherboard and the cpu. Both are brand new and I have no others to try to rule one out. How on earth can I tell if its the cpu or mainboard??

Unless the mouse or keyboard could cause this? Is that even possible? They work fine on my pc.

Last week I had a friend call with same problem. When I went over to take a look, finally found that he had ordered a CPU that was not compatable with that board. Make sure that the CPU you have is what you ordered, and then check the motherboard site to make sure that exact CPU is supported. Make sure to check version #'s, and if there are any BIOS updates needed to use that CPU, as that may make a diff also.

Take the motherboard out of the case and lay it on an anti-static bag. Only install the CPU with heatsink/fan, speaker, keyboard, mouse and power supply to the board. Jump the power pins and listen for any beeps. If there are no beeps then the mobo or cpu is no good. If it does beep add the video card and memory to see if it posts. If it does than you most likely installed the motherboard and standoffs incorrectly and it was shorting out against the case.

Did you plug in any extra power connectors that are needed for the mainboard?

I just had a "fail-to-boot" on my last build and it was simply because I forgot to plug the extra 4-pin 12v connector to the mainboard. As soon as I did that, it booted right up.

P.S. I took a look at a pic of your mainboard and it looks like there's a 4-pin power connector right in the middle of the board.

If all the RAM modules are the same brand they may still be incompatible. If you remove all the RAM sticks and it does not beep, I might suspect a problem with the CPU like Whiskeyman was saying.

Try clearing the CMOS. It will tell you about it in the motherboard manual (disconnect all power). After you clear the CMOS, try booting to the onboard graphics again.

    Thanks for the tips guys.

I did connect the extra 4-pin cable and all of the components are compatible, in fact they come as a bundle.

I have also cleared the CMOS, but when I tried onboard gfx I had not just cleared it then, so I will re-try that.

Is it possible that the mouse or keyboard can stop a motherboard reaching post?

I feel that I have a weekend of work ahead :(

I will post back with any results

Keyboard, I would think, only if you were to see the LED flash. Mouse, you can startup without it.

Check through the stickies at this forum:

although I think everything has just about been covered.

It is good that you got it as a bundle. If you have to send it back they can't blame hardware from other vendors.
