I have been running NS 7.1 with Mozilla 1.4 on my laptop for a couple of years.(W2000) I have a newer computer (WXP) I would like to transfer NS 7.1 to.

I have the original NS 7.1 downloaded setup file. Is it possible to copy and paste this file to my new computer and proceed as a new installation. If it is, I must be missing a step. When I open the file and load NS 7.1 and click on the NS icon it does not respond.

I did read the post by Romona re: Sea Monkey as a NS 7.xxxx replacement. I will probably do that but first I would feel more comfortable if I were able to get everything transferred to my new computer as is before I start making changes. Do I need NS running before I can make the change anyhow?

    Thanks TRoof

    TRoof,

You don't have to install Netscape 7.1 on the new PC in order to transfer files to SeaMonkey:

    Install SeaMonkey
As this is a first-time install on the new PC, a new Profile will be created.
Delete that newly created Profiles folder from the Mozilla folder, located here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles
Replace the newly created Profiles folder with a copy of the Profiles folder from the old PC.

If not a first-time install, delete the existing Profiles folder from the Mozilla folder
Replace with a copy of the Profiles folder from the old PC.

Start SeaMonkey, and all Profile data should be intact.

Even if you install Netscape 7.1 on the new PC, you will still have to copy the Profiles folder from the old PC, and replace the newly created Profile which is created when you install Netscape.

Easier said the done. I downloaded seamonkey and opened it on my new computer. I had to transfer my profile in two parts as it would not fit on one CD@700MB. After creating my profile folder I then set out to install the files and folders I had transfered from my old computer to the new profile I created.

The first thing that happened is the error message " cannot copy mail file: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Then tried bookmarks and got the error message "Cannot copy bookmarks: Cannot read from the source file or disk. "

I tried all the possible ways to get the files to transfer. I even copied them from the CD to the desk top. Same, same.

Some of the files that would transfer were the cookies document, prefs.bak file, custom text document.

Seems the ones that don't transfer are either folders or contents of folders. The folders and files that don't transfer are marked read only and will not allow a change to archive.

Where have I gone wrong.

    Thanks, TRoof

P.S. Are the MSF files the ones that can be deleted in the Mail folder?

Your Profiles folder is over 700 MB? Wow, that seems way out of line to me. Do this for me, if you will:

Open Windows Explorer, and right click your Profiles folder. Then select "Properties" from the menu. It will show Type - Location - Size - Contains
Post back with the "Size "

Now follow the same procedure for the Mail folder, and post back with the "Size ".

To follow thru with your question of what you did wrong, altho the Profiles folder size exceeds what I would deem normal, you should copy the folder to the new PC Mozilla folder. This is assuming you have deleted the new Profile folder created by the SeaMonkey install.

Here is a Solutions page that will give you a step-by-step process for moving the Profile:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/movesameprofsameOS.html
This was originally written for Netscape and Mozilla, but also applies to SeaMonkey.

Check the Profiles folder that you copied to the new PC to ensure that it isn't marked "Read Only ". To check, right click the folder, and again, select "Properties" from the menu. Scroll down to "Attributes ". If Read Only is enabled, then remove the tick to disable, and click OK.

If that isn't the problem, it could be your CD is corrupt, or scratched. Read this explanation which I found Googling, and especially the last two paragraphs:
    http://www.softwarepatch.com/tips/cyclic-redundancy.html

    Thanks!

The size of my profile folder is 844 mb size on disk. My mail file is 581mb size on disk. I did have another mail folder which contained older mail which I renamed Old Mail but did not include that in the transfer. Just can’t part with anything. Admittedly there are files there that are probably not needed, but I am not sure which ones are safe to get rid of so I just left them alone.

The folders and files that don't transfer are marked read only and will not allow a change to archive. Revert back to read only after OK. I am using CD-RW disks

Just wanted to get back to you with the answers to your questions. I did check out the link you provided which I will attack tonight after work. Maybe pick up some new CD-RW on the way home. For now it is HI HO, HI HO its off to work I go.

What about deleting the MSF files from the mail folder?

    Thanks - TRoof

    troof,

    Try this:
Zip your Profiles Folder from the old PC, before copying to the CD-RW disk. This will prevent the files from converting to Read Only. Hopefully you will be able to get the entire Profile on one disk.

    Next:
Remove the existing Profiles folder from the new PC
Copy the Zipped Profiles folder to a temporary folder on the new PC
Now unzip the Profiles folder to the Mozilla folder

Now you need to archive some of that mail before you lose it all. Ensure that your Inbox is small, and create subfolders for archiving.

Yes, it is the MSF files which can safely be deleted.

    Romona,

And I thought this was going to be easy. Let me ask you this. Is it possible to link the two computers together via usb ports or jumper cables from my truck or even a shaman to enable a transfer of files from the old to the new?

I am getting the feeling that there is a weak link in the normal transfer process. I have two different CD writing software programs on my computers. On my old I have B’s clip and on the new I have Easy CD creator 5.

At one point when I inserted a freshly formatted disk with files I had copied from old to my new and showed the disk as empty. When I returned the disk to my old it still had the files on it. This actually made it impossible to copy the new Easy CD creator 5 app. to my old and give that a try. I am suspecting this is where the problem lies.

Plus I am using Memorex CD-RW 4X 700 MB CD’s. I have been told that all brands do not work with all machines. There just seems to be too many variables and one of these variables is the culprit.

Anyhow, the size is not a problem since I can transfer the bloated mail file separately once I have this problem solved.

Let me know if there is a way to transfer files without using the CD method.

    Thanks for enduring. TRoof

Let me try to understand. You see the files on the CD on the old computer, but you don't see them on the same CD on the new computer?
I would not use CD-RW disks. Regular CD-R are cheap, and you can use them as mini-frisbees if they don't work. My program has three option to copy, which, very clearly tells me if I am going to get anywhere: 1.music file; 2 data files; 3. a CD which can be used in any computer.
I have never used file transfer between computers, so, I would that it is possible, but don't know how to do it.

    troof,

I downloaded the B's Clip PDF Quick Guide, and found your problem:
Easy CD is your best bet, from experience I know that you can burn data to CD, and it is readable on any PC... I'm not sure why you think it is impossible to install Easy CD on the old PC?

Memorex is as good as any brand, altho my choice has always been Maxell.

I used a nonformated disk to copy the Adapted shared folder which contained the CreateCD application. I was able to make a copy from the new computer and transfered the copy to my desktop of my old computer. When I attemped to click and run CreateCD it just hilighted and did nothing. Probably needs to be installed somehow but am clueless to this process. Am I getting close to anything?

I did a search and found various ways to transfer data. For anyone with similar problems the location is :http://support.dell.com/support/top...rt/dsn/en/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&dn=1056916 One was to use the external CD writer I have connected to my old computer and when I have the files copied from my old computer to the CD to then connect the external CD writer to my new computer. Do you think this is a solution? Would I need the install disk to run the external CD writer on my new computer?

    I will not give up.

    Thanks again - TRoof

    TRoof,

You are correct, in that you must install Create CD in order for it to work. That applies to any application. Just copying the Program folder does nothing.

You can try with the external CD-R/RW, however if you use the same software (B's Clip) you most likely will wind up not being able to read the CD.

I just had a brain-surge, and that can be dangerous. Do you have all your Dell CD's? If so, see if you have the Create CD on one of them. If so, then try and extract the application, and install on the old PC. Otherwise, it looks like you may have to buy Data Migration Software. I would also check in with the Dell guru's and see what their suggestions are. They probably know whether or not you can access the Adaptec software...

    Don't give up...

    TRoof,

Do you have an external Hard Drive? If so, that would definitely be the way to go, especially in view of the size of your Profile...

    Romona,

I apologize to the fact that this has turned into a non Netscape/Mozilla issue. I appreciate the help you guys have offered. It has given me some ideas to try which I will do when I have more time. Thankfully I have my old computer to continue on with until my new one is up and running.

I purchased a refurbished Dell which did not come with the install disk. They never seem to. Had good luck ( 5 years ) with a refurbished Toshiba with no install disk, so went the same route this time. Saved $$$$

I do not have an external HD just the CD burner by Sony.

I will also try the Dell Guru's and see if they can offer anything.

I promise to post when this problem is resolved in case anyone else may
    be experiencing similar problems.

    Hi ho, Hi ho.

    Thanks TRoof

Hi Romona and other loyal Netscapie’s,

I guess it has taken me longer to follow up on this but it has taken me this long to get right with the world of transfer, sort of. First I would like to let you know how my problems with transferring my profile were resolved.

I kept getting the “cannot copy mail file: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" message when I tried copying my profile from my old computer to my new computer. So what I did was ignore the files that this error message was triggered by. These files were individual mail files. What I finally did was to go to the mail folder in my profile and click on the affected file. When it asked which program I wanted to use to open the file I chose SeaMonkey.

Now it gets interesting. I then went to edit and chose Select All and copied the complete document and pasted it into a notepad document. I then copied the document and pasted it into a new folder and it showed up as a notepad text document. I then right clicked the notepad doc. and then I chose Sea Monkey as the program to open it. Now with the document open in SeaMonkey I then went to file and clicked on save page as. At this point I changed the name of the file I was working on to something else. I just added another letter to the end and clicked save. The document manager should open at this point with the new file created. I clicked on this file and when asked, I opened it again with seamonkey and saved the same file name to the same new folder. In the new folder was the new file in the correct format that for some reason I was able to copy to the new computer without a probleim. It seems that all I did was go in a circle but for whatever reason it cured the “cannot copy mail file: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)" message. A rinse cycle perhaps?

Anyhow I managed to get my profile and mail folder transferred. Now if I can only get my Quicken files to transfer (won’t transfer as per Quickens instructions for transferring accounts to another computer) but that is for another day and another forum.

If anyone has an explanation of what I did please let me know.

    Thanks TRoof

I have never experienced anything like you did. Power to you, if you got it working.
My experience with Quicken was to stay with the old version, ca.2003, and forget about bank transactions. I do my bookkeeping, and, that's good enough for me.

    Thanks Westside,

Got Quicken installed. Found out another reason not to use CD-RW is they do not last as long as CD-R disks. How about a CD-RW disk golf tournament? :D

    Thanks TRoof

Considering the cost of CD-RW, it is not worthwhile using them. I can think of only one useful application, and that is to archive mail.
I don't know about golf, but definitely for a mini-frisbee tournament. I have hundreds of spent CD-Rs.
