As the title implies, I can't access the Internet when the router is being used. If I plug the cable directly from the cable modem to my computer, the Internet connection works fine.

My roomate thought that his Linksys BEFSR41 router was the problem and bought a new one. I plugged that one in to no avail. The old one was about 2 1/2 to 3 years old.

    I'm running Windows XP SP1.

Thanks in advance for any tips and/or suggestions.

OK let's start with the basics. What can you do? Can you:

To ping, run cmd. Then in the command window enter:

    ping destination_address

and hit return. So to ping 66.249.93.99 you'd enter:

    ping 66.249.93.99

What responses do you get from the pings?

I pinged all three and all were sucessful. When I pinged the router, I plugged in a cable from the modem to the router and one from the router to my computer. For the other 2, I plugged the cable directly from the modem to my computer.

Just for the heck of it, I tried pinging Google and 66.249.93.99 with the router in play and here's what I got:

    Google:

Ping request could not find host www.google.com Please check the name and try again.

    66.249.93.99:

    Request Timed Out.
    Request Timed Out.
    Request Timed Out.
    Request Timed Out.

    Ping Statistics for 66.249.93.99: Packets sent = 4, Receieved = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss).

I think your router has not been setup properly.

Does your ISP need your MAC address of the router?

    I fixed it!

I shut down all 3 computers, unplugged the router and the modem, plugged the cables back in, turned on the router, plugged in the cable modem, and restarted the computers and voila! We now have access to the Net on all 3 computers!

Note to self (and to others): When in doubt, follow the instructions that came with the hardware. :)

    Thanks for the help guys.

Off to find out why my CD-ROM drive isn't working. Uugh!

One of my Grandfather's favourite truisms was "if all else fails, read the instructions." You're not the only one to follow instructions after the problems start! :D

Good to hear that the problem is solved - and well done for sorting it.
