9% free Hard Disk Space left

    My hard drive 9% free space left.

    I uninstalled the programs that I could uninstall. The other programs I definitly need to use.

    My version of Windows was

    Windows XP SP1 Upgrade version.

    I updated to sp2

    I did windows updates

    I updated IE to 7 beta


    Now, I have all of these cab file, sp1 back up files, driver files, windows update uninstall files

    taking up half of my hard drive.

    I know these files are needed in case of emergency.


    Is there anyway I could just burn them to a cd?

    If yes, if I needed to in emergency, how would I use the files on the cd to recover.

    I look in the windows folder and there is tons of junk.

    How big is your hard disk? Unless it is very small, the items you mention couldn't possibly take up half of it!

    The cab files should stay but backup files could be deleted if the system is running OK but this wouldn't free upp that much. They can be burnt to CD and put back in case of emergency but the emergency may prevent you from putting them back.

    The path to those files is in the registry and Windows wouldn't find them on the CD unless the registry is edited. You have "labeled" yourself as experienced and are probably aware of the perils of modifying the registry and in this case, I wouldn't do it. I would take the "copy back" route.

    Well, to be honest, I would do neither ... ;) ... I would buy a bigger hard disk and clone the old to the new!
